I f I The Associated Press CLEVELAND The Cleveland Indians sent Matt Williams home to Arizona on Monday, acquiring Travis Fryman and lefthander Tom Martin from the Diamondbacks. Williams, a power-hitting third baseman who wanted to play in Phoenix to be with his children, agreed to a $45 million, five-year extension with the Diamondbacks as part of the trade. "This is the most important decision of the rest of my life," said the recently divorced Williams, who is forfeiting $2.5 million of his 1998 salary, reducing it from $7 million to $4.5 million, in order to be closer to his children. "As a result, he's here," said Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colan-gelo, who can put the money toward the $3 million that goes to Cleveland as part of the trade. "It was a perfect situation for me in Cleveland," said Williams, who was divorced from his wife of eight years shortly before the 1997 season. "I played on a great team with tremendous teammates and great fans. "Given all that, I had to trade it all for a chance to have a good relationship with my children. They are the most important thing, without a doubt, in my life." Williams, 32, batted .263 last season, his first with the Indians, with 32 homers and 105 RBI. Fryman, 28, was acquired by Arizona from the Detroit Tigers on Nov. 18 in a trade the night of the expansion draft. He hit .274 last season with 22 homers and 102 RBI. Martin, 27, was 5-3 with a 2.09 ERA for Houston last season. He was selected by the Diamondbacks with their first pick of the THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Disaster movie AUBURN, Ala. Busby FSU sweeps Camp award The Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. Six-time defending ACC champion Florida State pulled off a sweep Monday of The Associated Press post-season awards. Bobby Bowden received 44-of-74 votes to win his second ACC Coach of the Year honor in the past five, seasons. Bowden also won the award in 1993 the year he won the national championship. Defensive end Andre Wads-worth was named the ACC's Player of the Year and top defensive player. The 6-foot-4, 282-pound lineman had 16 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Thad Busby was the runaway winner of the Offensive Player of the Year award. The senior quarterback threw for 3,317 yards and 25 touchdowns. Running back Travis Minor was the ACC's top rookie. B Woodson stakes Heisman claim: Charles Woodson, Michigan's two-way standout, was chosen winner of the Walter Camp Award as the nation's top player. Only five times has the Camp award gone to a player who did not win the Heisman, the last time in 1990 when Notre Dame's Raghib "Rocket" Ismail won the Camp and Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman. Williams was entering the final year of a contract that would have made him Cleveland's highest-paid player in 1998. After failing to sign Williams to a contract extension, the Indians tried to trade him to Arizona on the day of the expansion draft but the deal fell through. Indians General Manager John Hart said at the time that he wouldn't trade Williams unless there was an "impact-type deal." Fryman will make $6.5 million in 1998, the final year of his $25 million, five-year contract. Red Sox, Vaughn still talking: Mo Vaughn's contract negotiations, which went public last week when the first baseman's agents announced an impasse just days after he said he expected a deal to be done, went back underground. That may be an encouraging development for the Red Sox, who have maintained all along that they want to re-sign Vaughn, who turns 30 on Dec. 15. Red Sox General Manager Dan Duquette spoke Monday by phone with Vaughn's agent, Tom Reich, who refused to discuss what was said. There are no meetings planned, but that could change quickly. Vaughn is under contract for next season, but Duquette would like to have a deal done before Vaughn enters his free agent year. B Noteworthy: The Pittsburgh Pirates signed infielder Kevin Young to a $3.6 million, two-year contract. Young hit .300 with 18 home runs and 74 RBI last season with the Pirates despite missing six weeks with a thumb injury. . . . The Kansas City Royals claimed shortstop Orlando Miller off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Miller, 28, hit .234 with two home runs and 10 RBI with Detroit last season.
