ARochester man was shot on Saratoga Avenue shortly after midnight Saturday. The 54-year-old man was shot in the “upper body” around 12:40 a.m. and the injuries were “non-life-threatening,” according to a statement from Rochester Police Capt. Gary Moxley. He was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital. Another man was arrested at the scene, but the charges, which were not identified by police in the news release, were not connected to the shooting. The police have yet to arrest a suspect in the shooting. City man shot; no arrests STAFF REPOR T ALatino Night Gala was held Saturday night at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention to cap Rochester’s Hispanic Heritage M onth. D ignitaries and comm unity members gathered to celebrate a month of community outreach that included 12 events covering such topics as arts, health, and other areas. “The theme this year was ‘United by our roots,’” said Ray Mayoliz, t he city’s manager for Y outh Outreach and Viol ence Prevention, who w as representing Mayor Lovely Warren. “We’ve taken the roots of a tree, how it’s all nurtured, and how it grows. Even though it might branch out in different ways, in different directions, our roots come from the same origins. That’s what we pride ours elves on. We are united b y where we originated from. We’ve got to realize that we are united.” It was an elegant evening of food, music, dancing, and a special scholarship presentation. Leadership Academy senior Gei- zi Gonzalez Reyes, a native of Honduras, re- c eived the Academic & C ommunity Excellence Award for his perseverance. Gonzalez Reyes started at Leadership in 2013 as an unaccompanied refugee student. He was supported by the Unaccompanied Refused Minor F oster Care Program at the Catholic Family Center and spoke no English when he started. He now maintains a 3.25 grade point average.
