Matching talent to task especial- ly the volunteer kind is tricky busi-' ness. The value of volunteering could v, be enriched if the payoff was clearer to;; the volunteer. Maybe capitalistic mo-; i tives, some self-serving motives should come to charity. Our culture, schools and parents teach the three p's: profit, pride and power. But the rewards of volunteering aren't so clear to retirees. Social workers and charity staffers "' preach the sermon "for the less fortu-' nate," which carries a tinge of guilt with it. Church folks preach the "St. '" Peter Principle," which implies gates will open. But more tangible rewards , might encourage more retirees to vol-; unteer. "By modifying their own behavior, older Americans can play an important role in the treatment and management of their high blood pressure," ' said Richard Modes, director of the National Institute on Aging, which eo-spon-Sored the study with the National Iteart, Lung and Blxd Institute. More than two out of every three older Americans have hih blood pressure, a condition that places them at increased risk for cardiovascular divipse, stroke and kidney disease. The study involved 975 men and women with high blood pressure, including 585 overweight patients. Participants ranged in age from 60 to 80 years, and all took a single medication to control their high blood pressure. During the study, which was conducted at four academic health centers, participants were counseled on cutting sodium intake to 1,800 milligrams per day less than half of what the average American consumes daily and were urged to lose at least 10 pounds. By the end of the 30-month study, nearly a third of participants no longer needed to take any medication to control their high blood pressure. Lit j ii La. J Ls-ii.J a l0-i3,.0. NOW SHOWING!
