Eight years ago I met a man who had been caring for his wife, who also had Alzheimer's disease. As a result, he said he feels a need to volunteer his time to help others, including lecturing about his Holocaust experiences for the Palm Beach County school system. Participants ranged in age from 60 to 80 years, and all took a single medication to control their high blood pressure. During the study, which was conducted at four academic health centers, participants were counseled on cutting sodium intake to 1,800 milligrams per day less than half of what the average American consumes daily and were urged to lose at least 10 pounds.
