The chief's top aide, Inspector Joseph Macy, is a member of the executive board of the Police Minimum Standards Council. The police academy, sanctioned by the State Department of Education, offers Its facilities and courses to all area police agencies. The executive level of the West Palm Beach police has been honored with appointments such as Macy's to the standards group and Chief Bames' naming to the Executive Board of the Florida Bureau of Law Enforcement. The department has been honored by civic, scholastic and legal organizations and Is considered one of the best In the state.With an increase In training at all levels this year, the department hopes to raise even higher its level of The West Palm Beach Police Department also has a cadet program In which 18-21-year-old men with law enforcement careers In mind can work with the police department and leam police techniques while they attend college, University students, who are majoring in police work, also spend their Internships with the city police. Policemen are also encouraged to further their educations. Many attend classes at Palm Beach County Junior College In Lake Worth and Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton. Last year nearly 30,000 hours of Instruction were taken at the West Palm Beach Police Academy. About half of that went to the 132 members of the West Palm Beach police department with the other hours accumulated by the sheriff's deputies and policemen from Boca Raton to Palm Beach Gardens. Lt.
