Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, Nov. 10, Join The Greats On The Area Greens By CHUCK VOORHIS The golf season in the Palm Beaches never ends. It just keeps rolling along, week after week, month after month with ever-changing scripts and casts of characters. No one should be surprised at a golf course, a Supermarket, a marina or a service station by seeing Jack Nicklaus or Julius Boros or Gardner Dickinson, Sammy Snead or Tom Nieporte do-', ing what people do at golf clubs, supermarkets, marinas or service stations. They live in the area Nicklaus in Lost Tree Village, Boros in Fort Lauderdale, Dickinson in North Palm Beach and Snead and Nieporte in Boca Raton. Some of the great players of a decade or more ago, still active, live or work here during the winter months. Cary Middlecoff lives in Lost ;Tree Village. Henry Picard is the pro at the Seminole GC, Snead at Boca Raton Hotel and Club, Johnny Farrell at the Country Club of Florida, Bobby Cruickshank at the (Julfstream GC, Herman Barron at Boca Rio GC. Nieporte is the new winter pro at the Royal Palm Yacht & GC. One Club, the Pine Tree GC has more than its The big month of golf is the Winter Activities program at the PGA. On this schedule are the match and stroke play championship, the Quarter Century championship (for PGA pros who have been members for 25 years or more), the Senior-Junior pro-pro and the Seniors championship. This last one has been more prominently known as the Teachers PGA Seniors but Teachers dropped its sponsorship after the tournament last January. A new sponsor, the Ford Division of the Ford Motor Co. has taken over the sponsorship of this $40,000 event in January and also the $10,000 PGA stroke play tournament. The annual Lost Tree Club pro-am, which usually involves top touring pros after they have concluded play in the Doral Open, is on tap again in March. It's a one-day outing. Also in the pro-am category will be the $30,000 plus U.S. Pro-Am Invitational which was transferred this year from Cincinnati to the St. Lucie Country Club with dates of December 12-14. This is now a 54-hole event which was first won by Jack Nicklaus, as an amateur, with pro Bob Kepler, in 1960. Another tournament fixture is the Champion of Club Champions, always played around the New Year holiday season at the Breakers. Other standouts coming up will be the Father-Son at the Atlantic CC, the Dick Wilson Memorial at Pine Tree and another LPGA tour event at Cypress Creek, this one known as the Palm Beach Open, at Cypress Creek in late March. The National Mixed Four-ball, played last year for the first time at Palm Beach National G&CC, returns to that club next year. The PGA holds two schools each year for pros who aspire to play the big tour. One was concluded in October and another is due in April. Out of possibly 100 candidates, 12 or 15 get their tickets to play the tour. The schools consist of three days of formal classroom instruction followed by two 72-hole tournaments over the Monster East Course of the PGA. The low scorers for the 144 holes are usually the players who get their tickets. Less than 10 of the 41 clubs in the district are not open the year round. Those which remain open for play, have some sort of programs going throughout the summer as well as the winter. Women are particularly active in the individual club play as well as countywide competition. The Palm Beach County Women's Golf Association and the Gulfstream Women's Golf Association have a summer schedule that moves the players from club to club. Each plays two tournaments a month and the associations dovetail their schedules so that there is no conflict. In addition there is an interclub team competition which has a fall and spring schedule. The juniors are not forgotten. Most clubs have their own Junior programs but there is one group the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association which embraces all juniors in the county. It has a varied schedule ranging from seven to 10 tournaments, each at a different club, culminating in the county championships annually played at the West Palm Beach CC. share of famous golfers as members Snead. Tommy Armour, Louise Suggs and Helen Hicks. Clason. During the Winter Activities program at the PGA National Golf Club in January close to 1,000 club pros from all over the nation gather for a series of five tournaments. Before and after this program, the Florida PGA section has a series of nine tournaments, at as many clubs, in which many of these pros play. The Palm Beach district has four members of the LPGA tour in residence here during portions of the year. Besides Miss Suggs of Delray Beach, who plays the tour occasionally, there is Marl-lynn Smith, a native of Tequesta, Barbara Ro-mack, a teaching pro at the Atlantis CC and Sybil Griffin, teaching pro at the Cypress Creek CC. The tournament schedule, understandably, is heavier during the winter season than during the summer although this past summer saw two major tournaments played at the Lost Tree Club the Southern Women's Amateur and the Southern Men's Amateur, both with star-studded fields. Coming up in November at the Pine Tree Club will be the Louise Suggs Invitational, an open tournament which is one of the regular tour stops of the LPGA. It will be one of three tournaments for the lady pro winter Florida tour. The American Senior Golf Association is returning to the PGA National GC and the Breakers in December for Its annual stroke play tournament. It was played there last December. Its match play tournament, played at these clubs last March, will return again next year. Complete Area Course Listings the county were six clubs with seven courses. Now there are eight clubs with 10 courses. n . ... y rfHf 1- The overall picture a year ago was 44 clubs and 51 courses; now it's 49 clubs with axvoux 62 courses. I Eighteen of the clubs In the county are private and to play on them requires introduction The explosion in golf course construction, which Is sweeping the nation, has been heard loud and clear in Palm Beach County and the area Immediately surrounding it. A year ago, the county had 38 golf clubs with 45 courses, some of them having extra nine or 18-hole units. This year, there are 41 clubs in the county with a total of 52 courses. Some of the new clubs and courses are still In the process of construction. A year ago, on the fringe of by a member. Greens fees are as varied as the type of courses.
