Murray Goodman, who built about 15 million square feet of shopping centers in the Northeast, began living part-time in Palm Beach in the early 1970s. Burton Handelsman, a worldwide shopping center investor, bought a Delray Beach condominium in 1979 because "my wife wanted to start a winter escape. I just couldn't live there without doing something." Goodman got involved in Worth Avenue at the request of Saks Fifth Avenue's parent company, for whom he had built stores up North, he said. If his current proposal is approved, he'll build for Neiman Marcus so it, too, can be on "one of the most prestigious streets in the world," he said. Goodman bought the building at 300 Worth Ave. in 1979, home now to Brooks Brothers. He watched the opening of both Town Center and The Gardens malls affect the avenue, he said, as younger shoppers opted for the malls and many smaller shops closed. "But I think Worth Avenue has solidified, and it's only going to get better," Goodman said. Handelsman bought his first Worth Avenue site in 1979 across from where Goodman's Esplanade was under way. The building now houses Tourneau jewelers. Today, Handelsman's properties include the Gucci building and the Worth Arcade shops, a cluster of shops at 240 Worth Avenue. Handelsman, known for stirring change into the staid avenue, is suggesting something Palm Beachers might consider radical different signs. "I'd like to see Worth Avenue come back with the character type of signs, where the tailor has the scissors hanging out," he said. "It may be a little corny, but it has a tremendous amount of charm."
