Kmart Corp. sold the chain in September to Leonard Green & Partners, which is combining it with Hechinger Co. to form the nation's third-largest home-improvement chain. The Delray Beach store, which employs 83, will close Jan. 17, according to a letter the company sent to the city. A spokeswoman would say only that the two were in a group of 12 Builders Square stores the company is closing to "improve the operational profitability of the newly combined companies." The Lake Worth store will close by March, she said. Barnes & Noble opened a new store last week at the southwest corner of Old Boynton Road and Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach and closed its existing store just north of there at Congress and Gateway Boulevard. The 27,000-square-foot store, which is more than twice the size of the old location, features a cafe and a music section. Barnes & Noble is looking to sublease the old site, a spokeswoman said. The company is under contract to buy about 2.5 acres near the northeast corner of Congress Avenue and Okeechobee Boulevard, not far from Rooms to Go's existing store at 2035 Okeechobee Blvd. The land is owned by Roger Dean Enterprises and is used to store automobiles, President Roger Dean said. The parcel is not part of the Roger Dean Chevrolet dealership, Dean said. Neither party would disclose the sale price.
