Regionally, new home sales jumped 25.5 percent to an annual rate of 197,000 in the Midwest and 15.7 percent to a rate of 251,000 in the West Both were-the highest levels in four years. Sales rose 19.2 percent to a rate of 93.000 in the Northeast, but fell 12.1 percent to a rate of 351,000in the South. Nationally, the record sales pace reduced the inventory of unsold new homes to a 3.8-monlh t supply. That's a record low,"' breaking the previous mark of 3.9. months set in November. The Associated Press WASHINGTON New home sales surged to a record high in February, one of many signs of buoyant economic growth that could unsettle inflation-wary Federal Reserve policy-makers meeting today. Sales of new single-family homes jumped 4.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 893,000, the Commerce Department said Monday. That broke the old record of 880,000, set in March 1986. The series goes back to 1963. The report was the latest in a string showing the economy has maintained considerable mo mentum this year, even though Asia's financial turmoil has cut into the export sales of some U.S. manufacturers. Existing home sales also hit a record in February, rising to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.75 million. Americans' incomes grew robustly, retail sales picked up and unemployment returned to a 24-year low of 4.6 percent. So far, sales are on track to exceed last year's 19-year high of 804,000. Analysts said several factors created the sale record: mild temperatures associated with the El Nino current in the Pacific Ocean, mortgage rates hovering 67 41 87 -1 102 103 -1V4 104 -'A 115'A 4'A 100V4 4'A 103 -Vl MBLInt3B02 SeaCnt9V!03 TelArg 11'04 TmMarMx03 9.1 103 AH 498 ATT6S00 ATT 5Vb01 ATT VKta ATT7S05 ATT8.2s05 ATT7Vs06 ATT7W7 ATT8'24 ATT 631 AIM7'414 AlzaSsOS AlzazrW Amresco899 Anveeco 10304 AnnTaykSMO Argosy 12s01 Argosy 13V04 AoOrnH 1220t AutDtzr12 - BkrHghzr08 BetlPa 7VS13 BellsoT6V403 BellsaT64t04 BellsoT7s05 BellsoT7s2S BellsoT Vl&Z BellsoT 7V3 BstBuy&ifflOO BethSt6'A99 BethStmi BelhSt 8.46S05 Bevrly9s06 Bluegm 8V12 120 YM.
