F6 Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, Nov. 10, 1968 Construction Activities Mount By 43 Per Cent mi i i I The happy sounds of construction in Palm Beach County signals that all is well with the area's economy. Elsewhere in the country, home building is expected to decrease 40 per cent, accord ing to a National Home Builders Association official. Here, it has already increased by 43 per cent for the first six months of 1968, compared with the same period in 1967, and reckoned In dwelling units completed. Overall value of permits issued in the first six months of 1968 for buildings, houses, industry, commercial, public construction and interior installations is $84 million, com- pared with $64.9 million the same time In 1967. This is a dollar increase of XI per cent overall. Builders in the six first months of 1968 already reached $57.4 million. It ap 7T I Oceanside Condominium Construction Sites Busy Areas rfiajre Construction Of Luxury Homes Increasing In County pears the 1967 figures will be topped before this year's end. There's a reason people like to establish and build here. This county has 2,684 square miles located In a sub-tropical clime. It has 45 miles of ocean beaches. It is. .weather-tempered by winds blowing across the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Sti eamitc produce a moderate and uniform climate. A neat explanation is that it makes for good living. That's why Florida homes are different from those found elsewhere. Open construction, screened rooms and wide expanses of glass prevail. Center of living and entertaining is in these "open" Florida rooms, screened patios, many with barbecue or swimming pools. Cellars just do not exist. There are less heating facilities, but air conditioners and some cooling Is desirable. Snow shovels are never needed. Authoratlve criterion of building activity is the Palm Beach County Builders Exchange. Manager Mrs. Ruth Bastin reported it filed 192 building plans to the end of August, 1968, compared to 139 for the same 1967 period. "The Exchange expanded facilities to accommodate more contractors and subcontractors using these plans," said Mrs. Bastin. "So much work Is being done, so much more Is anticipated just by figuring on our prospective listings, that some firms fear a shortage of skilled building trades manpower." Mrs. Bastin also noted that architects are seeking to augment existing staffs; fulltime estimators are busier than ever.
