MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1997 9C , Heat Calendar t . . Upcominf garnet In the Paint NovemberDecember RUN FOR THE AGES: Houston went on a 27-0 run Saturday against Golden State in a 107-100 win. During the run, the Rockets held Golden State scoreless for nearly nine minutes. When the run began, the Rockets trailed by 18 points. When it ended, they led by nine. NO SWEET HOME: This week, the Washington Wizards move from US Airways Arena to the new MCI Center. Said the Wizards' Tracy Murray about the old arena: "Tear it down, tear it down. . . . Ever since I've been here, it's like somebody put a hex on this place. Tear it down." c THE PALM BEACH POST a .a 30 1 2 'JO 4 t 730 6 SUN SUN 7 J 30 9 1.30 10 11 12 8 00 13 9:00 Nate Haata Pacers hctta SUN SUN TNT UP We have the type of talent to blow teams out ... We aren't coming off the bench with any slouches." JOHN STARKS, Knicks guard REPORT TV: SUN - Sunshine. Shaded games at Miami Arena; All times EDT Mourning works out, still weak-kneed Heat sey's game Sunday night. Austin is averaging 18.6 points and 9.6 rebounds and among the NBA's top 20 shooting at 522 percent. Including 16 games last season Mourning missed, most because of a foot injury, the Heat are 22-9 with Austin subbing for their star center. Mourning participated in 3-on-3, full-court drills Sunday running, jumping, setting picks and working through screens. He did no 5-on-5 work. "I have never experienced this type of weakness that I have in my left leg," he said. "The doctor said it's only going to get better with time. It's just part of the process. I don't have any strength in it at all. I'm doing a lot but I'm definitely compensating with my right leg." Said Riley, "He's a long way away. Until I see him really efficient, moving comfortably, and in condition, I'm not going to put him in there." Starting off guard Voshon Lenard missed Sunday's practice with a severely sprained left ankle, suffered in the first half against Milwaukee on Saturday. Miami's next game is Wednesday at home against Philadelphia. By Ed Price Palm Beach Post Staff Writer MIAMI Alonzo Mourning practiced full speed with the Miami Heat on Sunday for the first time since preseason surgery on his left knee. Mourning said he expects to be back before the Christmas Day game at Chicago. Coach Pat Riley estimated in two to three weeks. "When I first got hurt I said eight weeks," said Mourning, who had surgery Sept. 27 to repair a partial tear of the patellar tendon. "I like to go into things with a positive attitude. I put higher demands on myself to get back early. Summaries "Unfortunately my body controls me and my body tells me it's not ready. I can't let anybody else pressure me into coming back sooner than when I'm supposed to come back. It would be foolish because I'm 27 years old and I can play 10 more years in this league." Another reason Mourning can take some time is Miami's success in his absence. Palm Beach Post Staff Writer ATLANTA Dikembe Mutombo scored 22 points and the Atlanta Hawks, shooting a season-high 57 percent from the field, beat the San Antonio Spurs 108-96 Sunday night for their franchise-record 13th victory of November. Atlanta, eclipsing its previous record of 12 victories for the month, has won three in a row to improve its NBA-best record to 14-2. The Hawks were never threatened by the Spurs, who didn't arrive in Atlanta until 3 a.m. after defeating Dallas the previous night in San Antonio. Atlanta led 24-10 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter after Mutombo hit a hook shot, and the Spurs never got closer than 34-28 on Sean Elliott's 15-foot jumper with 7:06 left in the second period. Lakers 105, Raptors 99: Eddie Jones scored 11 of his 32 points in the first quarter as host Los Angeles started fast before having to hold off Toronto. The Lakers remained the only NBA team without a home loss. The Raptors dropped their 13th straight the longest losing streak in the league this season as their NBA-worst record fell to 1-15. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Lakers at the Forum, and 11th straight at home dating back to last season. Their 13-2 overall record is the second-best in the league behind Atlanta's 14-2 mark. Nick Van Exel had 17 points and 10 assists, and Rick Fox scored 17 for Los Angeles. Pacers 101, 76ers 89: Coach Larry Brown's return to Indiana was a failure for his 76ers as Rik Smits has season highs of 25 points and five blocked shots and Mark Jackson had a season-high 14 assists as the Pacers won in Indianapolis. 27 2-10 2-2 1-5 4 I Gill Cage Williams Kittles Cassell Edwards Douglas Galling Benoit McDaniel Haley 24 3-4 2-2 2-7 4 3 8 Miller 23 2-3 37 6-9 21 4-9 33 4-11 28 2-9 13 1-4 16 1-5 14 2-6 12 1-3 19 4-8 19 6-10 5 1-3 Outlaw Strong Seikaly Hardaway Price Schayes Armstrong Wilkins Harper Anderson Evans Taylor 25 8-11 1-2 2-3 3 2 20 17 3-5 0-2 1-1 2 1 17 34 2-2 2-4 0 3 4-4 0-4 11 13 3-3 1-2 7 2 7 0-0 1-10 3 2 0-1 0-0 3 2 2 0-0 0-0 4 0 4 0-0 0-2 12 2 0- 1 34 2 3 9 1- 1 0-3 1 I 13 0-0 0-0 0 0 2 Respert Rogers Garner 13 1-3 0-0 3-3 0 1 2 1 04 04 04 1 0 0 16 1-7 0-0 2-4 0 4 11 0-2 04 3-5 1 1 24040 81 16-2113-38 27 28 99 Totale 3 0-1 0-0 0-0 0 1 Totals 24037-9311-201844 24 21 87 24034 8011-14 8-32 25 21 81 Totale Percentages: FG .494, FT .762. B Norman is down and out Down Under: Greg Norman, the only player to lose all four majors in a playoff, was beaten by England's Lee Westwood in the Australian Open in Melbourne on the fourth playoff hole. Norman led by two strokes with two holes remaining, then bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18. On the fourth playoff hole, he failed on a 5-foot putt and took a bogey while Westwood closed with a par. "I'm disappointed," said Norman, who was bidding for his sixth victory in this event in his home country. "But I wasn't really in sync. I didn't have a whole lot of rhythm." Norman could have won with a 10-foot putt on the final hole of regulation, but he missed and finished tied with Westwood at 14-under-par 274. Norman led Westwood by a stroke entering the final round but stumbled to a one-over 73. Westwood caught him with a 72 over the Metropolitan Golf Club course. Australia's Craig Parry closed with a 65 and finished third at 275. Phil Mickelson began the round at six under, but had, a triple-bogey at the first hole andj, wound up tjed for seventh after a 72. putt worth $60,000 on No. 11, a 4-footer for $30,000 on No. 12, and another 8-footer for' $40,000 on No. 13, becoming the first player in the 15-year history of the Skins Game to win three consecutive holes. "There was nothing we could do about Tom Lehman," O'Meara said. "He was on fire out there." "I just kept saying, 'Nice shot, Tom; nice putt, Tom; good hole, Tom," Woods said. "The guy went berserk on us." Lehman wrapped up his big payday by sinking a 7-footer for another birdie on No. 17. He also benefited from some shaky putting by the other three players. O'Meara finally found his touch on No. 16, when he made a 20-footer for $120,000. O'Meara then tied Lehman when both made birdie putts on No. 18, setting up the playoff. Lehman barely missed from 15 feet on the extra hole, and O'Meara rolled in his 5-footer worth $100,000. O'Meara had won one hole worth $20,000 on the first day. Woods' play was marked by putts that just missed. Duval, in the middle of a vacation when called to fill in for Couples, wasn't on his game.
