' Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, Nov. 10, 196S-D17 'Vacuum Cleaner To Clear Litter To; NORTH PALM BEACH Residents here have a surprise In store for them In the form of a huge "vacuum cleaner," to be purchased In the near future for use by the village's Public Works Department. Village Manager Larry Rob-bins refers to the unit as a "commercial leaf and litter vacuum cleaner" and says that It will help save the city close to $5,000 during Its first year of operation. The unit which will be attached with a trailer hitch to the village trash truck, generates a suction of 12,500 cubic feet of air per minute, Robbins said. Currently, lawn clippings, leaves and other assorted light materials discarded by residents at the street are picked up by hand by the village garbage truck crews once a week. "The vacuum will enable our garbage crews to operate much more efficiently," Rob-bins said. In additltlon to the vacuum unit, the village will soon be advertising for bids on a "brush chipping" machine, which will also hook up to the village trash truck. Used In many municipalities, the brush chipper reduces the bulk of limbs and other unwieldy cuttings about seven times. "What we put In seven truckloads can be put In one truckload with the new brush chipper," Robbins noted. He also said that the village will be discontinuing its practice of dumping brush at the. county dump, which costs the village 25 cents per cubic yard.- "With the chipper we will provide a readymade mulch for a local nurseryman to use In his business," Robbins said. Of course, giving the chips to the nurseryman automatically reduces the amount of money paid to the county for dumping trash there. Robbins estimates that the total cost of the two self-con- talned units will be $5,500, and said the village will advertise for bids sometime this week. "We've tried both units," he noted, "and I'm sure they'll do the job that has to be done at a lower cost and with savings we couldn't realize any other way." Right now, Ed's two trips to Miami per week are costing almost $500, or over$1000amonth. Ed's 18-year-old brother, Chuck, has been tentatively selected to donate one of his kidneys to Ed.
