Palm Beach Post-times, Sunday Nov. 10, 196&-D15 Automation Will Leave Pacific Island To The Birds MY SINCERE THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SUPPORTED ME ZELL DAVIS JR. bird refuges in the country, and, as long as the Coast ' Guard has been watching, there has been no worry that the wildlife ecology would be molested. In season, the rocks teem with hundreds of thousands of screeching seabirds, notably the common miirre, cormo rants and western gulls. There are petrels, black oystercat-chers, pigeon guillemots, auk-lets, tufted puffins and brown pelicans. On the western side of the island tremendous herds of sea lions quarrel, bark and strut on the rugged terrain. REPUBLICAN PD. POl. ADV. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Coast Guard is preparing to automate a 113-year-old lighthouse station in one of the world's most miserable suburbs. Since 1855, men have kept the light burning on the lonely granite rocks of Southeast B'a-rallon Island in the main Pacific sea lane 30 miles west of San Francisco. It's officially a part of the city and county of San Francisco, with a transient popula-ton of six men, hundreds of sea lions and a million birds. By mid-1970, the men will be gone. The birds and sea lions can have it, the Coast Guard has decided. The convincer was the development of techniques for automatic control of the station's vital light, fog signal and radio beacon. Since the days of the Spanish explorers, the Islet and the other rocky spits of the Faral-lon chain have been arrows pointing to the Golden Gate and the riches of the West. Farallon in Spanish means "a small rocky island in the S'i miles around. Overseeing all, at 350 feet altitude, was the great light. Coast Guard tenders, along with supplying the colony with normal goods to keep the station going, had to worry about baby food, diapers and such. Helicopters made rush trips to doctor-less Southeast Farallon to answer emergency calls when junior seemed to be getting sick. Sometimes he was. The Coast Guard hollered-"uncle!" No more families. Today, six men are assigned ' to the station, with two on liberty at a time. Every second Wednesday a tender leaves Yerba Buena Coast Guard Base In San Francisco Bay to supply the station, always a tough task. Farallon Light Station has no pier or dock. The tender puts out a motorboat that heaves into a rocky eastern inlet. A boom 20 feet above the water lets down a canvas-sided basket and' supplies and personnel are hoisted dizzily up to a landing slab. With the Coast Guard planning to leave, the rocks of the station have become an earnest concern of area conservationists. The state is one of the finest sea," and the Spaniards knew what they were talking about. Coastwise and trans-Pacific ships home in one the Faral-lones. In fog and at night, the 800,-OUO-candlepower light spears 22 miles out to warn mariners of the brutal rocks and shoals that have claimed 11 ships and untold boats over the last 110 years. The last big vessel was the Liberty ship Bergh, which was bringing 1,300 Navy men home from the Pacific war on May 21,1944. . The men, on the doorstep of their homeland, were whooping and shouting on the deck as the captain strained through chilly fog to hear the Farallon fog signal. He repeatedly sent word for the men to be quiet. The ship hit the rocks. 1 Because of currents flowing away from the killer crags, the men were swept away from danger and rescued safely. Until a few years ago, when It simply got to be too much trouble, five Coast Guard families lived on the bleak outpost. Their "neighborhood" was four blocks long and two blocks wide on a seagirt spit H&BWO- Cleaners and Launders Palm Beach Mall Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. Next Walgramt Open 7 am H 7 pm HI SAVE IWv H-f T0DAY : ifc AAnP'f 1ispm3r5 11:30-5:30 c wf GREATEST SELECTION ' '';,M'iilviUti mm m T0WN 0F MEN'S FASHION SWEATERS!!
