MSI THE PALM BEACH POST MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1997 13A n r -i vi Tougher sentences will stop drunk drivers n m e i r State's lawyers in tobacco lase entitled to their fees , 4 " - -i f ft " Vi 1 Since the tragic deaths of Dr. Lawrence Yellin, Nancy Yellin, Robin Moore-Yellin and Nathan Yellin, Mothers Against Drunk Driving has received many generous donations from outraged citizens. MADD Gold Coast is grateful for this help. We have received phone calls asking us why drunken driving has not been stopped after all these years. Drunken driving has been dramatically reduced and can be stopped, but it will take everyone demanding that drunken drivers spend 24 hours in jail on the first conviction, lose their licenses and serve severe jail sentences. Underage drinkers will have to have their driving privileges delayed. All of us must work to have our Legislature approve these sanctions. Meanwhile, we must support law officers, prosecutors and judges in their efforts to eliminate this violent crime. I know the unrelenting pain of senseless death because my dear 1&-year-old son Robbie was killed in June 1996 by a drunken driver. Betty Downing Boynton Beach I y father died in 1958 from emphysema after several years of excruciating pain. His premature demise not onlv brouerht million. Five percent income (invested conservatively) would net each lawyer $450,000 annually for life with the principal intact Let's pay the lawyers a reasonable amount as quickly as possible. I am sure a large percentage will retire immediately upon payment. Dr. Jack H. Okun North Palm Beach Silver's record demands investigation great personal sadness but wrecked our family finances, because we had no insurance protection. Hpw unfortunate that we did not have a knight in sTjihing armor like Bob Montgomery to challenge jfohighty tobacco industry. Just think of the suffering and loss that might hive been averted. RLE PHOTO Nancy Yellin and her son, Nathan, were among the four people killed in the Oct. 25 crash in Delray Beach. ( QSJuQIS Gov. Chiles approached Mr. Montgomery and other attorneys to represent Florida in this suit They accepted on a contingency basis, which meant they would not be paid unless they prevailed. The Palm Beach Post and writers Jenny Staletovich and Shir-ish Date should be commended ; for the story on Rep. Barry Silver and his driving record. This man is a menace on the road, and judges continue to withhold adjudication or give him a fine. What's going on here? Who are these judges who have been so nice to him? Was there some kind of a quid But I would like to clarify one sentence in the fourth part of the series concerning my leaving the area to begin a new start while my neighbors stay to fight. I have been active in the battle to preserve our "little bit of heaven" in Palm Beach County since the beginning. Untold hours have been spent by my neighbors and me to resist annexation and to argue against commercial rezoning. I write this because I feel that the article im Rep. Silver plied that I deserted my neighbors while there is still a battle to be fought As your article so effectively pointed out, the developers and big landowners have prevailed. We still anticipate working with the land planner as our corner is developed, but the explosive growth is upon us. We may have lost the battle, but we stood up for our beliefs and values. SaraW.Krick West Palm Beach Veterans diminished by store sales November 11 is supposed to honor all veterans, living, dead or missing in action. Why do businesses degrade this special day by having Veteran's Day sales? Why not have them spend a few dollars to visit some of the real heroes, suchas can be found at the Veterans Hospital? I know that those vets would be very happy if they were able to visit one of these stores, or getting, as Commander Gaynor wrote, "Just a thank you or a handshake, not a special day sale." Jim Leibeck Palm Beach Gardens Heston deserves no awards for this role Whatever subject he puts his wit to, George McEvoy is always worth reading. I especially enjoyed his commentary on the role Charlton Heston has been assigned to play as first vice president of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Heston's NRA co-star is spokeswoman Marion Hammer, a grandma who helped pass legislation in Florida that permits people to carry concealed firearms on our streets, a lack of disclosure that allows gun toters to dine, shop and drive among us without our knowledge. So far I don't hear anyone applauding Mr. Heston's great scene at the National Press Club. It will take more than his waning talents to convince the astute that a pathological obsession for guns is worth more than 20,000 American lives a year. Mr. Heston calls it the "ultimate freedom." Others call it a "new kind of slavery." Madie Fillion Stuart We fought the good fight I am writing in reference to the four-part series "The cost of growth" by Joel Engelhardt. I commend Mr. Engelhardt for his well-written article and for all of the research that went into it. r.-. They invested their hijand even their money into preparing for this case with no guarantee of recovery. They won the Casjsj and I, along with many other Floridians, feel Iheyrshould be paid according to their signed agreement : -Though I do not know the other lawyers, I do know Bob Montgomery, and I am aware of his gejlerous philanthropy in our community, if My greatest outrage is over the resentment qrealed by current publicity presenting Mr. Montgomery and the other members of his team as greedy" After all, they had a signed contract that sliduld be honored, whether we agree or not. H.BertHallock Palm Beach Lawyer should accept reasonable fee If Bob Montgomery is committed to "helping to build a better community," he and the other lawyers should accept a reasonable fee and stop coveting the settlement awarded to the community of Florida, most of which is earmarked for children's health programs. '. ' Shame on you, Robert. Greed is not a commendable virtue. Don Thompson ' ' -' Palm Beach Gardens $233 million apiece is too much , I want to thank The Palm Beach Post for publishing excerpts from Judge Harold Cohen's ruling on attorney's fees for the state tobacco settlement. - It took a lot of guts on the judges part to rule against attorneys who are part of his profession. I think $233 million for each of the 12 attorneys is excessive. If each attorney were to receive $10 million after expenses, he or she would net more than $9 pro quo? This calls for some kind of investigation by the Division of Driver Licenses or the governor. It ' should not be swept under the table. Harry Walker Boynton Beach Rep. Silver: Epitome of a bad politician Rep. Barry Silver, with 65 traffic offenses in 18 years, should go far in politics, as he is the epitome of many of the people we elect. He is not responsible for his actions, nothing is his fault, and he blames others (the police and his owning a sports car). William Russell Tequesta Jupiter Christian remembered veterans One hears many complaintsabout how patriotism is on the wane and how people no longer seem to care about the sacrifices our men and women in the armed forces have given to ensure our freedoms. I'm extremely pleased to report that Jupiter Christian School has not forgotten. On Veteran's Day, for the past six years, they have honored our veterans with a breakfast, followed by an excellent ceremony put on by the students, who gave up their free time to show their appreciation for our veterans. It was inspiring to see these young but serious faces as these students did everything to make us welcome. Our future is in good hands. i Leo Warring President, Branch 148 Fleet Reserve Association Alexandria, VA Write us The Palm Beach Post welcomes letters from readers.
