C2 Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, Nov. 10, 1968 Career In Mental Health Mrs. Ghioto Pioneer In Unique Florida Program Health Association, and Is on the advisory boards of several of the related agencies. She is secretary of the Judges Committee on Mental Health, a dialgoue-exchange group of agencies in care and services. She is a member of the Florida Nurses Association, the honorary nursing sorority, make for a healthy attitude on life, she enjoys reading, occasional golf, an active Florida life and . . . knitting. A stitch in time, you know! Sigma Theta Tau, and national and local Reserve Officers Association. Living the philosophy that all work and no play does not serving in the Army Nurses Corps, in which she is a lieutenant colonel in the reserves. Parents also shouldn't feel guilty about seeking guidance to cope with family problems, the diminutive, attractive, darkhaired Banna says. If a child is in school, there are guidance counselors and caseworkers who can work with them and their parents. If problems become threatening, or are not resolved, school personnel will refer them to the Child Guidance Center at 826 Evernia, which serves the entire county. Banna Ghioto is assigned to the center as a resource and referral person. Her task Is to work with all agencies in the By VEDA GRAVES fart Most parents are not given enough credit for rearing their children. Too often they're made to feel guilty for the behavior of their children. So believes Banna Ghioto, Mental Health consultant and specialist for Palm Beach County. In personal life, she Is Mrs. Wllford W. Ghioto, the stepmother of five children and the grandmother of six. This is a studied opinion. She has been studying the problems relating to mental health for many years, since her days in professional' nursing. She entered the mental health education and services field alter field, whether affecting the mentally retarded, alcoholics, the aged, or other specialized field. Sometimes it means setting up workshops, appearing as a panelist, meeting with nursing students at Palm Beach Junior college, or with other trained professionals with common goals and problems. One of 27 consultants in the state assigned to specific communities, Mrs. Ghioto was appointed by the state Division of Mental Health in January of 1957. The program she Is involved with is unique to Florida, by the way, and began in 1954. Right now the local woman is engaged in partnership with A r B U R D I N E I'S I other specialists in envisioning the 1.2 million dollar complex known as the Community Comprehensive Mental Health Center or CCMH. Its groundbreaking will be December 7th, just below St. Mary's hospital on 45th St.. West Palm Beach. It will cover five areas of need: inpatient care of all ages, outpatient care, a day care center, 24-hour emergency services, and a consulting and educational service. Hopefully, it will be in operation by the fall of 1969, and thus heralds the arrival of enlightened cooperation and education in mental health here. Incidentally, Mrs. Ghioto emphasized the 1.2 million operating figure will be matched with federal funds. Nationally this is mental health education emphasis on month, Banna Ghioto explained, but locally a year-around educational program is in effect. She points out that this is marvelous, because in many areas there were no facilities for children who needed psychiatric care, and no coordinating of services for the public good, when the program was initiated. Today there is the coordination and exchange of knowledge and services, and more understanding also by the general public. Do children have more problems than ever before, or is it that we do have more knowledge and agencies? A little of both, Mrs. Ghioto feels. There are strains and stresses from cultural changes and possibly more emotional problems. But universally, she pointed out, the areas of loss (death) and separation have always been times when both children and adults must be understood and helped. If not, extreme stresses lead to "falling apart". She mentioned that birth, the time of going to school for the first time, high school graduation, marriage and entering the services all are some of these separation periods. Better knowledge of a child's normal growth and development would help jnany parents. We must give children freedoms as they grow, and set reaoiiale limitations for them, not keeping them too dependent," she added thoughtfully.
