CODING TUESDAY It's never, ever, ever going . to go away, that baggy jean look. I've made peace withy this fact. (Sometimes when it's not worn by sulky, hipless 14-year-old boys . . with waists the size of chopsticks and a preponderance ' of visible underwear I even kind of like it.) Customers begin to control the rise and fall of women s hemlines By Patricia McLaughlin Universal Press Syndicate "When I was a girl," designer Joan Vass says, "skirt lengths were dictated by the people in Paris." Dior spoke and all across the Western world, hems rose and fell. Then, in the late 1960s, designers proposed to replace short skirts with a midcalf hem they called the midi. Stores bought lots of them, but customers didn't. Ever since the midi debacle, designers have been bravely whistling past that particular graveyard by insisting that hemlines don't matter. So it raised an eyebrow or two a few months ago when designer Isaac Mizrahi told a gathering of fashion reporters: "I think everybody wants to cover the knee now; it's just something that's in the air." Everybody? Challenged, Mizrahi backed off a little bit, allowing that "There are some women who really love their knees and don't want to cover them" and won't, no matter how fashion changes. Not to mention women who really hate their knees and have been covering them all along. As one friend told me resignedly, "With knees like mine, there's no choice. Skirts have to be long." Now that we have a choice, few of us will buy clothes that make us look bad. Most women would rather wear something flattering, even if it isn't the very latest. As Vass says, "The intelligent woman of style knows exactly what looks good on her, and that's what she wants to find in the store." But what looks good on you is only half the hemline equation. What looks good to you also matters. I remember how great another friend looked 12 years ago when she was pregnant in a dress that cleared her knees. She also has straight skirts that just cover the knee from the last time they were the latest , thing. They may look right to Mizrahi now, Q LOOKING AHEAD What is tencel? Does it have to be dry-cleaned? , , Tencel is a man-made fiber made from wood pulp, or natural cellulose. Designers like it because it drapes and has a soft, almost suede-like texture that works for ev- erything from jeans and . : khakis to floaty shirts and. structured jackets. Most -garments made from tencel can be machine washed. . . NICOLE PISCCPO MICHAEL BRYANT The Philadelphia Inquirer Designers who used to issue 'pro-nunciamen-to' on hemlines now find themselves in an awkward position: They keep an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of the customer. but she doesn't wear them anymore because they seem "kind of prim ." . So: When a designer says "everybody" wants to cover the knee, just what everybody is he talking about? Everybody who happens to look good in hemlines just below the knee and happens to like the way they look? Or everybody who prefers to wear whichever hemline is the latest, no matter how it looks on or to them? Whichever, it's got to be a smaller everybody than ever before. Which puts designers in a double bind: Their job is to come up with an enticing, exciting new vision of how women should dress but, as Vass says, "they had better make what women want to wear or they won't sell the stuff." This spring, she's putting her money on skirts that are either ankle-length or above the knee. B Palm Beach County GreenMarkets, Saturdays through April 25.
