IT" By John Crittenden Palm Beach Post Staff Writer HIALEAH Sharp Appeal, owned by Marty Cherry of Palm Beach Gardens, won his third straight stakes race at Hialeah Park on Sunday. Each time the winning margin was less than a length. In Sunday's $100,000 Bou-gainvillea Stakes, ridden by Herb McCauley, Sharp Appeal was first by a half-length over OK by Me. Yagli lost second by a neck. Bomfim was fourth. "Sharp Appeal is a blue-collar horse," said trainer Marty Wolfson. "He earns every dollar he wins. He has won nine races in his career and I'll bet his total winning margins don't add up to 6 lengths." The 5-year-old became the third horse to win the Bougain-villea Stakes in consecutive years since the event was run on the Hialeah grass course for the first time in 1946. Chicale II won in 1950 and '51. Flying Pigeon was the Bou-gainvillea champion in 1985 and '86. The $60,000 first prize carried Sharp Appeal, the 1997 Hialeah Turf Cup champion, to $438,171 in lifetime earnings. Horse racing B Event of the Year takes Jim Beam Stakes: Event of the Year beat two longshots to the wire in the $600,000 Jim Beam Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. The Seattle Slew colt, unbeaten in four races, ran the ll miles in 1:47 just two-fifths of a second off the track record set by Hansel in the 1991 Beam. Hansel went on to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes that year. Event of the Year was unchallenged through the lane, with Yarrow Brae finishing second, 5 lengths back, and Tru-luck third. B Grand Slam last: Old Topper returned to racing with a S'i-length victory over Son's Corona in the $80,550 San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita. Grand Slam, the wagering favorite who was injured in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November, finished last in his comeback, beaten by nearly 15 lengths. Still, if the five-time 1997 winner takes the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 11, minds can change. Murray Durst says he will not change his opinion. "That horse doesn't belong on the race track. He will kill somebody some day," said Durst, co-owner of Lil's Lad, who was bumped around by Coronado's Quest in the Florida Derby. Another story It would be a shame if Majerus were to resign. Read what Miller, who as a freshman Prop 48 student sat out his freshman season at Utah, says about Majerus. "I stick to everything he says," Miller said. "I look at him as a father figure. He has things to say about more than basketball. He tells you about life." Miller, by the way, is on course to graduate. Majerus' team includes Michael Doleac, who is weighing medical school against an NBA career, and Drew Hansen, who was a Rhodes Scholar candidate. But it is Miller of whom Majerus says he is most proud for academic achievements. Tubby and Jeff The kid from Georgia, who redshirted last season at the request of former Kentucky head coach Rick Pitino, was united with the first black head basketball coach in UK history. How's that for a forced alliance rooted in same dangerous history of the Deep South? But read what Sheppard says about Smith. "Coach Smith was there for us," Sheppard said. "As far as coaching, there are great things he has done. But the most important thing is just being our leader. "He really does a good job teaching us the game of basketball, but even a better job of teaching us how to be men." Ed Morse's ijB 13 M mm 2001 S. Miller is from Los Angeles. He is black. Almost all of his teammates are white. Almost the entire population of the state of Utah is white. The backdrop Utah upset top-ranked North Carolina in a national semifinal game Saturday night. Ndiaye fouled out after playing only 14 minutes. He failed to score, grabbed two rebounds and blocked two shots. Johnsen (seven points, two rebounds, one steal) played well off the Utah bench. Johnsen, in published reports Sunday, said Ndiaye spit at him. Ndiaye, in published reports, said: "I don't have anything to say about spitting on him. Why don't you ask him what he said to me? He has no right to use the n-word at me. He used it more than once, and I'm not sure that's the first time he's done it. He said it to me the whole game." According to a broadcast report Sunday, Ndiaye recanted his statements upon arriving back in Chapel Hill, N.C. Johnsen and Majerus, however, remained upset. Justifiably so. "We were getting really competitive," Johnsen said, "and our bodies were clashing into each other. I Ie slapped me across the face at first, and he told me he was going to kick my . It kept happening and happening. "The only words that came out of my mouth, I said, 'Look. I'm 100 pounds lighter than you, and I'm kicking your butt.' And he spit at me. I never called anyone the n-word. I never did." Majerus was stunned by Ndiaye's accusations. "Britton Johnsen never called anyone nigger in his life," Majerus said. "If they want to get a lie detector test in North Carolina, I'll fly Britton Johnsen there. I know this: Britton Johnsen is one of the nicest people and one of the highest-character guys. I can say without reservation or hesitation that he did not call him a nigger. I think that word is reprehensible. "I know what (former North Carolina coach) Dean Smith did at those lunch counters and buses (for desegregation). I've been in more civil rights marches than probably most of you.
