I The trial is scheduled to ' start a week from today. ; The lawsuit, filed in De-: cember 1995 but delayed by numerous motions to have the suit dropped, also hopes : to prove a decades-long pattern of Blue Key's control over student campus politics. The suit was brought against the group and two alleged "Blue Key operatives" by Charles Grapski, a UF graduate student and outspoken critic of the group. The case is attracting attention in powerful circles in Florida because of Blue Key's role as a training ground for Florida politicians and civic leaders. Many see an invitation to join Blue Key as a ticket to one of the traditional power networks in the state. The Blue Key alumni list reads like a who's who of Florida politics: U.S. Sens. Bob Graham and Connie Mack, Gov. Lawton Chiles and Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay. About 100 students of more than 40,000 at the university are active members of the Blue Key. New members are chosen by current Blue Key members based on outstanding leadership and service. Alumni are scattered nationwide. Members have sent letters to alumni soliciting donations to defray an estimated $20,000 in legal fees. Founded in 1923, Blue Key is a private group that receives no school money. Each year members organize events such as homecoming and the enormous pep rally known as "Gator Growl." Blue Key also is known as the machine that runs student government. "Although Florida Blue Key refers to itself as a leadership organization, in my opinion it operates on the campus primarily as a political organization," said Art Sandeen, UF's vice president for student affairs, in a sworn affidavit for the lawsuit. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Davie, said that when she ran against a Blue Key member in a UF student government race in the late 1980s, she was threatened and told her political career after college would be in jeopardy because she worked, successfully, against the "Blue Key system." The Grapski lawsuit is the first time Blue Key's reputation has been legally challenged. Grapski has offered to settle for $25,000 and an acknowledgement from Blue Key that it was responsible for the flier, plus an apology. Student body President and Blue Key member Chris Dorworth said if the group loses the lawsuit, it will not ruin the organization. "I don't think the lawsuit will topple Florida Blue Key." Dorworth said. "I think it still attracts top-tier students who excel in leadership." la call! CHARLOTTE H.
