Palm Beach Post, Thursday, Nov. 7, 1968 A3 5 U.S. 'Copters Shot Down As Reds Step Up Attack SAIGON (UPD U.S. headquarters Wednesday reported heavy Communist assaults near Saigon and the loss of (our American helicopters in the capital war zone. The battleship New Jersey hit targets 100 miles east of the city in its southernmost barrages of the war. In one action. Communist' gunners attacked the U.S. merchant ship President Jefferson on the Nha Be River 15 miles south of Saigon Tuesday. No casualties or damage were reported, and military spokesmen said the attack was repulsed by U.S. Navy gunboats and helicopter gun-ships. Communist gunners shot down four helicopters Monday west and northwest of Saigon, killing one U.S. Army crewman and wounding six others. Another American was hurt when enemy gunfire downed an Army OH23 helicopter 12 miles from Pleiku in the central highlands. All five helicopters were destroyed, spokesmen said. A Viet Cong sabotage attack early Wednesday on the strategic Phu Con bridge blasted apart a huge section of the two-lane span 14 miles northeast of Saigon. Eight persons. including seven American soldiers, were wounded and another U.S. soldier was listed as missing. The Phu Cong bridge, built four months ago, linked the main highway between the U.S. Army base at Cu Chi and Long Binh just outside Saigon and carried about 150 convoy trucks daily. "If they kick It down, we'll put it back up again," Lt. Gen. Frederick Weyand had said at the time the Phu Cong bridge was dedicated. The firing missions by the New Jersey were aimed Tuesday at Communist fortifica tions on the coast of the South China Sea in the Phan Thiet area 100 miles due east of Saigon. Spotter pilots directing the fire said broadside salvos destroyed 12 bunkers and five structures, and tore up 500 yards of a road and tunnel complex. The New Jersey joined the war on Sept. 30 and had been shelling North Vietnam until such attacks were stopped last Friday. In ground action, troops of the U.S. 9th Infantry Division Wednesday reported killing 16 Viet Cong and capturing 11 suspects In surrounding a village 47 miles southwest of Saigon.
