. -4- -X --V 4 lft Palm Beach Post, Monday, Nov. 4, 1968 Political Dissension Shakes Rhodesia This group Is seeking a suitable leader. Among the candidates are William Harper and Lord Angus Graham, who were dropped from Smith's Cabinet this year. Dominion party boosters also are flirting with any Cabinet ministers found unhappy under Smith's leadership. SALISBURY. Rhodesia (AP) Wide-ranging political dissent has surfaced in Rhodesia tor the first time since Its unilateral declaration of independence from Britain. Whatever the outcome of Salisbury-London negotiations to settle the constitutional dispute, Prime Minister Ian Smith faces increased opposition from outside and within his ruling Rhodeslan Front party. After Independence was de- IfLUCT G0Dy TAJSSESSOR clared Nov. 11. 1965, Rhodeslan whites united behind "goold old Smithy" against pressure from Britain, black Africa, the United Nations and the'black majority in this territory. Now serious political protest from the right and left of Smith can be heard. It promises to become louder. On the far right is a group Smith once dismissed as "my lunatic fringe." These ultra-conservative elements demand an end to negotiations, declaration of a republic, entrenched white supremacy and closer ties with South Africa. Sewage engineer ten Iden-sohn bolted the Rhodesian Front in March because of what he saw as its liberal ten dencies, and launched the Rhodeslan national party. "The national government of this country has to be kept In white hands for all time," Idensohn told a rally In Salisbury. His first priority would be to oust the 15 black members of Parliament. Among Idensohn's supporters Is tobacco farmer Chris Phillips, who has described Prime Minister Smith as "a white kafflr." In this sarea "kaffir" means about the same as "nigger" In the Unit-' ed States. Others are trying to revive the defunct Dominion party. Those who call a phone number advertised in the Rhodesia Herald are urged to band together to protect "the heritage of your children." 2531 6KBCH0KIRD. SHOP WESTWARD 613-9393 SISSOUnCtNltVD.
