Once the bids have been submitted, Wood and the head ot whatever department will be using the item or material up for contract schedule a conference to determine the best offer. In his spare time, which doesn't amount to very much, Wood works on his two "projects" for the department. The purchasing Department, in addition to Its researching, negotiating and buying duties, also is in charge of printing all letterhead stationery, envelopes, legal forms, and other paper, used by county departments. A recent big Job, for Instance, was processing the 1968 XJovernmental Study Commission (GSC) report Until about a year and a half ago, the Purchasing Department was under the Jurisdiction of the Engineering Department. With the hiring of Jack Dean as county administrator, it was recommended that purchasing be a separate department. Wood says, "I've tried to organize the department in a more efficient manner so as to provide the maximum service for all county departments." Previously he was employed as purchasing, agent for an area firm which deals with the manufacture of pre-fabricated homes. Being a purchasing agent Is mostly dealing with, "the deluge of mail and requisitions from all over the county" which come in every day Monday through Friday." "I spend a good deal of time on the phone, too, getting details," Wood explains in describing his work. Almost every Tuesday Wood Is present at the County Commission meeting in West Palm Beach.
