Debussy's Revolution Fizzles Out By DKLOS SMITH NB:w YORK (UPI)-There may be a few aging musicians and music lovers to whom It will be news that Claude Debussy's revolution ha fizzled out. What has happened to It evidently is what happens to many revolutions. They be-come old hat and part of the establishments Musicians and musical poople generally now seem unaware he started one. His last days wore plagued by hordes of Debussyltes fanatically pro-claiming his aesthetics. Now there are not enough of them left to drum up any real commemoration of the 50th anniversary of his death. It occurred last March 26. Only now Is it bring noticed, and for the most part In an offhand way. In one of Its first concerts of the season the Philadelphia Orchestra played him. The New York Philharmonic, the Roston Symphony, Leopold Stokowskl's American Symphony, and more orches. tras, major and minor, will get around to him during the winter. But they always do. Debussy now Is part of the standard repertory and his unique qualities are as conventional as those of the composers of the "i mainstream. Control The only really big-scale commemoration Is that of Beverldge Webster, who can be considered the last of the ."Debussy pianists." Once there were many of them, each with special insights Into the Debussy aesthetics of impressionism. These days pianists program Debussy as they do the standard masters a little bit now and then but never very much, Webster is embarked on playing all of his piano music in a cycle of three concerts over a period of five weeks. He was a boy piano student' In Paris at a time when DPbus-syltes were making life uncomfortable for musical con-servatives, and he gave his first all-Debussy concert when he was 16. For his anniversary-year Debussy cycle, his manager hired one of the smaller New York halls. There was a time when even the biggest hall wouldn't have been big enough. So far as posterity Is concerned it may be better to have been an eccentric genius than an original genius. Take Hector Berlioz, Debussy's pre. decessor In the line of French masters. The 100th anniversa-ry of his death occurs next March 8. But already it is being com-memorated. Last week tha New York Philharmonic, with Colin Davis conducting, observed it by devoting a full program to him. The big-name orchestras are In competition to dig the unfamiliar pieces Iron from his works. They are increasingly fewer. Berlioz has been growing the' century since his death while Debussy has been dlmln ishlng in the half century sine his. The San Francisco Opera has Berlioz's Impossible opera, "Les Troyens," in its rep. ertory this season. It is impossible because It ii much too long and complex to be performed in its entirety-It Is several operas. The San Francisco Opera is Riving an excerpt. Berlioz made most of his Ills, pieces difficult, and even impossible, to perform under ordinary circumstances. Despite that hi grows. Eccentricity on the ge nius level can pay off.
