After the first washing you will find there won't be two socks that are identical. You may evolve elaborate systems for keeping socks together. Cruel fate lies in wait for such as you. The sock bags you make will disappear or never get used, except for one odd, friendless sock at the time. You may stay up late hand-laundering all the socks you can collect . . . and they will come out in an amazing range of colors and lengths, considering that you bought them all the same color and size. You can't beat the sock rap, although there is a legend, totally unfounded, among some men that they have had women in their lives who can. Usually a man will say his mother was a sock-matcher but that's one of those things like her cooking, a figment of his imagination. Once I knew a man who was divorced from a woman, who was a slovenly housekeeper, a terrible cook, alcoholic and unfaithful. 10 YEARS LATER Would you believe that 10 years later when he married a marvelous young woman he made her life miserable by telling her how his first wife kept him in clean, matched socks? As far as I know there isn't anything you can do about the "Sock Situation" but all young women should be forewarned so they can steel themselves for their first family fight over what they will think is a triviality. It's only a triviality to a wo-' man who expects to wash and match her own stockings, even if she Is working to help pay the mortgage payments and buy the groceries. To a man, his socks and the hand-maiden who attends them are all-Important. Leave him alone when he's critically Hi, if you must, reveal his business secrets to his worst competitor, feed the children rat poison and run off with the garbage man and he'll forgive you. But fail him on socks and your marriage Is all a great mistake. -iw " ,sV t t Cnminp Soon1 Can Chemistry Save Doctor Bills? To Burdine's West Palm Beach DIRECT FROM 1FA YORK... ELIZABETH ARDEX'S RED DOOR BEAUTY CLIMC MTU EVEiYf JVC HOURS FOR WORKIXG H OlIIiiY By CELESTINE SIBLEY A young woman, who looked like she had been crying, spoke to me at a party. Her mother told her to ask me to give her my views on men and their socks. For a minute I gaped at her stupidly and soundlessly. Do I have views on men and their socks? "Yes," murmured the young woman, looking like she might burst into tears again. "Mama said you wrote about it and she said she wished she'd given me a copy of what you wrote when I got married. Now I'm afraid It's ... too . . late!" A tear did slide down her cheek at that point and I reached out and patted her shoulder, choking up a bit mv-self. SHOULD BE WARNED It may be too late. For, of course, no woman should allow her daughter to get married without first warning her about "Men and Their Socks." I don't have any rare or exceptional views on the matter. I Just know what any mature woman who has ever lived with a man has found out, usually to her great mental pain and anguish: men are a little crazy on the subject of socks. You can be a peerless housekeeper, a dedicated mother, cook like an angel, and generally comport yourself, as the song has it, like a sweet heart and a pal. But if you don't keep him in clean, matched socks you are valueless to a man. It goes without saying that this Is an Impossible task. In the first place, sock manufacturers don't make them so they can be matched after the first washing. (WMNS) In addition to preventing tooth decay fluorides may help prevent diseases of the gum tissues, strengthen bones throughout the body and reduce calcification of the arteries. This is what Dr. D.D.M. Hegsted of Boston told scientists attending the recent Western Hemisphere Nutrition Congress here. "In children alone we could save more than 100 million dollars the first year by using fluoridation," he said. Fluoride also Increases the stability of bone. Studies show that people living in areas with high fluoride content In the water had stronger bones and much less back trouble, according to Dr. Hegsted, than people living in areas with low fluoride content In the water. It has been estimated that 14 million women in the U.S. suffer from osteoporosis (weakening of the bone density) and could be helped If treated with fluoride. Want Peace PARIS (WNS) One male cabdrlver has been sentenced to four months in Jail and others are grumbling because lady cabdrlvers get better treatment than men fromcus-tomers and mechanics. "At the company I work for, this chippy always got her cab repaired immediately while mechanics wouldn't touch mine," the prisoner explained. "That is why I broke off the left door of her cab one week and the right door the next." The ladies are Irate but say that they will not go to war with the men. "We can win with peaceful methods," said cabbie Antoinette Bardot, a former beauty-contest winner.
