You can disguise those chips by dabbing them with an oil-based indoor-outdoor enamel, or appliance touchup paint. Put several thin coats on; this will thicken the paint and help fill the chip. Such painted chips may not last very long. Whenever the paint wears off, dab them again. You might have trouble finding a color match to the tile, but it's worth a try. ' :tf: communities. By PETER HOTTON The Boston Globe Question: I dug up an area 4 inches deep for a sidewalk I plan to pave with bricks, setting them in stone dust. A man said I should put in crushed stone under the stone dust before putting the bricks on top. Is that crushed stone necessary? The sidewalk is on hardpan. Answer: While crushed stone is desirable under a lot of paving to provide drainage, I don't think it's necessary, especially since you would have to dig deeper to provide room for the stone. Since it is on hardpan, it would be helpful. The standard procedure for a brick-in-stone dust (or sand) sidewalk or patio is 2 inches of stone dust. That means digging down about 5 inches to provide room for the bricks. Replace not repair Q: The 13-by-13-inch ceramic tiles in my kitchen floor have developed a few chips that have turned black. How can I repair them? A: Repair is impossible; replacement is the only way to get rid of Gary McKay r Val Oliva Val Oliva, a Realtor for Illustrated Properties in North Palm Beach, was top listef for February. Answers to silverplate The answers really poured when a reader's silverplate kept tarnishing in the dishwasher, no matter what kind of detergent she used. Nothing else tarnished, she said. The tarnish had to be cleaned, not just rubbed off. Hand washing the silverplate did not tarnish it. Nick Ratti, a retired engineer in Bristol, R.I., gave this answer: The tarnishing is caused by high temperature. There are two cycles in the dishwasher. The wash cycle uses scalding water. In the drying cycle, if you don't use an energy-saving cycle, the temperature is higher than a roasting oven.
