THE PALM BEACH POST , RESIDENCES ADVERTISING SECTION SUNDAY, MARCH, 29, 1998. n t f i . i' Take new view of remodeling with windows There's no law that says a bedroom must consist of just a bed and some dressers. A bedroom should be much more a retreat and a refuge. North American Precis Syndicate First impressions really do count even for houses. How does your main entry rate? Is it friendly, interesting or simply ho-hum? Remodeling your entrance can make it both unforgettable and practical. Sensible projects to help define your entry encompass the walls, special floorings and separate lighting. Keep in mind !- that many entry spaces are small and dark. An artistic window grouping or glass doors can make the entry seem bigger. A secondary entry can steer much of the dirt and touch-wear from the rest of the house. Even this highly functional area can benefit from natural light Tip: An interesting window design above the main door, such as an arch or a circle top window, adds drama and light. Specialty windows come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The kitchen is one of the most important areas in a home. Guests like to gather in the kitchen to relax and talk. Knocking out walls is an excellent way to increase the size of your kitchen and to remodel it without extensive construction. Think about the traffic through the kitchen and consider opening it to the family room. Or maybe you would prefer a kitchen with a pass-through window. Make sure you keep appliances and work surfaces within easy reach of each other. You also should include windows a family room, den, extra studio, bedroom or bathroom. Roof windows and skylights can transform an attic into a sunny retreat. You need to pay attention to some guidelines to make sure remodeling your attic is possible and worthwhile. For instance, heavy loads on the floor may require special support. You will need at least a 3-by-10-foot area on the floor below for a standard staircase. Ceilings should be lxh feet over at least half the area. You will want 12 feet between sidewalls, unless you're adding a dormer to expand usable floor space. Tip: When planning windows, especially in the attic, keep these points in mind: The higher the window, the deeper the light Tall, narrow windows provide thin, deep light, while short, wide windows provide broad, shallow light Porches are wonderful, especially when they're turned into sun rooms. Windows and patio doors let you view and step into the panorama. When you're inside, you'll have a light-filled, protected and comfortable room. High-performance insulating glass windows and patio doors ensure that Best of all, a well-thought-out solar design can blend with the style of any home in any climate. Tip: If you're going to have a window over a sink, appliance or countertop, it's best to plan for a casement window. This swings out by turning a crank. With double-hung windows, you have to lean across to raise and lower them. Bathroom design is often overlooked, which is why many baths are cramped and cluttered. Take care of the clutter with lots of drawers and cabinet space. Beautiful, large windows can get rid of the cramped feeling. If space is no object and there's room for long counters and perhaps a spa, bring in more light Form the walls beginning with the ceiling. Also consider an exercise area and a small sauna. You may want to have the room wired for phone, sound and cable. Tip: A small circular, oval or triangular window lets in a surprising amount of light and can add a feeling of roominess. There's no law that says a bedroom must consist of just a bed and some dressers. A bedroom should be much more a retreat and a refuge. Think about a whirlpool bath or adding a fireplace. Bedrooms also don't need to be dark. An arrangement of windows and skylights will let light pour in. Light makes a bedroom seem bigger and gives it character. So let your imagination go. Create a bedroom full of calming light. Tip: If you want to catch breezes and direct them into your bedroom, consider casement windows. You get top-to-bottom ventilation that you control by swinging the window in or out In all living areas of your home, you can have dramatic sunshine almost from floor to ceiling by replacing windows with patio doors. Top them with fixed transoms and the light will fully illuminate the area and boost the brightness in a nearby room. Tip: If you're adding doors to a formal room, consider French wooden-hinged or gliding doors.
