Another Unspoiled Natural A Visit To Finland Beauty Makes Unforgettable mm Palm Beach Post-Times, r . . at 1 was red granite. This forms the solid underlayer of Finland's rich soil. Recognizing that Dlpoll would be a carnival like attraction even for visiting architects, the technical students have chosen a unique statue, a large aluminum pine cone, for the front of their strange building. If a passerby puts one Finnish mark in the box the electrically operated pine cone opens. As we walked inside past walls of boulders and siniDle pine paneling we liked this weird building. Here seemed to be an answer to the modern world's need for natural Imagination. Because Helsinki's suburbs are only 15 minutes (and a .15 cent city bus ride) from the center of town, the country Is a part of the life of this city. This typifies what Finland offers a tourist. One can fly to and through the country, have deluxe accommodations yet enjoy unspoiled lakes and NORWEGIAN CARIBBEAN LINES . . ae" Ml A 1 1 eimii i' ' 1 ' .TT, ... Along Finland's 2,500 mile Irregular coast there are some 30,000 islands and skerries. For only $80, a visitor to Finland can take advantage of a special 15-day unlimited air ticket for all flights within the country. Sixteen airports can be reached with this local ticket. The network's northernmost airport is about 125 miles above the Arctic Circle at Kirkenes, Norway, a port on the Bering Sea. Another air ticket bargain is a triangular Journey from Finland's capital, Helsinki, to the western seaport and former capital, Turku, to the second largest city, Tampere, and back to Helsinki. The price for the circle trip Is an unbelievably low $12. We flew-to Helsinki from Frankfort, Germany. As in any International airport we found ourselves among world travelers. At a departure gate passengers faces tend to indicate destination. At gate 26 people reminded us of Finnish friends. The newspapers generally carried, however, were not Finnish but the "Herald Tribune," International edition. Many people In Finland speak and read English. The jet rose sharply over the wheat and vegetable checked environs of Frankfort into a dense rain cloud. Minutes later we were above this silver topped dark layer and In blue sky and sunshine. Lunch from shrimp and asparagus salad to fruit topped pastry was very good. The coffee tasted like an American blend. In an hour we glimpsed Europe's coast at the base of the Jutland peninsula. The next land we saw was Sweden. What a beautiful trip across the world's longest archipelago! The stretch of sea along the Swedish coast, across the foot of the Gulf of Bothnia, and down the shore of Finland was a splattered design of small and large islands and rock protrusions against the blue Baltic water. Here now was Finland. It appeared to be equal parts of lakes, farm fields which looked like putting greens but dotted with red roofed houses, and forest of Christmas trees and white birches. At Helsinki airport a large new terminal is being constructed in anticipation of the increased traffic the Flnnalr flights to America will bring. This may be one of the first airports able to cope with mass arrivals of future air travel. It has been planned for a minimum of steps and rapid processing. .HOW 2 6REAT SHIPS OF THE FLEET fiSuotTiwAtil iocciMet. t, tfttar if norwisian m larmrd 15,000 grots tons THE NEWEST AND MOST 7 DAY CRUISES TO JAMAICA (Pert Antonio, Kingston 4 Monltgo Sty) CVEItr CABIN HAS PRIVATE BATH Outl Stibiiiration 4 Elevttors Fully Air Conditioned " All staterooms with telephone 4 Sun Decks 2 Swimming Pools Magnificent Omlng Room . 3 Night Clubi Dine, mg. Because summer days in Finland are extra hours long it is possible to take a Helsinki city tour at 4:30 p.m. with good light for pictures. Except for her odd name of "Outl" the cute little blonde tour guide might have been an American girl. She had been an exchange student at University of Oregon. Many Finnish women have professions and responsible positions. Finland was the first European country to grant women the right to vote, in 1906. Outl was proud of the beautiful suburbs of Helsinki, especially the skyscraper In Ta-piola community. But Helsinki's showplace is the new ar-citectural creation, Dlpoll. on the campus of the Polytechni-cal College, Otanieml. Otanlemi, with Finland's first American type campus, serves 4,000 architecture and engineering students. Twenty per cent of these are women. Technical students (Teekka-rls) enjoy a special esteem in Helsinki. They hold the future of Finland's world wide reputation for bold new designs. The Teekkarls have a special brand of humor. Their work is wildly imaginative and expresses freedom and strength, prime elements of Finnish character. Dlpoll Is a fantastic contemporary structure. Its architects were a young married couple, Reima and Baill Pieti-la. The exterior suggests a cubist painting In 3D. The walls, roof, windows, general outline and also the floor level follow unpredictable lines. It is said to combine lunatic Imagination with architectural genius. A sense of harmony was conveyed by the buildings color. Vertical siding of copper in a warm brown shade had been treated to prevent discoloring. Europe's largest copper mine is In central Finland.
