I Not long after, Ranee and Jean made it permanent they got married. Today the Howards are the parents of two boys. The younger, Clint, nine, plays Mark, the big, black bear's best friend. The older boy, Ronny, 14, has completed his role as Andy Griffith's son Opie, on the Andy Griffith Show, now being seen in re-runs. Dennis Weaver (who played limping Chester on Gunsmoke for nine years) also married his college sweetheart, Gerry. They have three boys. Rick, the eldest, is a student at UCLA. The two younger, Rob and Rusty, are the same ages as the Howard boys. The two families are close friends and spent most of their free time together while Gentle Ben was being filmed in Florida. All Florida interviewed the Howards in their Miami apartment during the final weeks of shooting the current season's series of Gentle Ben shows. The unlisted telephone kept ringing. Each time it was a member of the Dennis Weaver family nailing down plans for a swim and picnic later in the day. Both families are completely free of the star syndrome. They remember their earlier days when good parts were as scarce as a freeze in Florida. Said Ranee Howard, "Show business pays well, but it's risky. We never do any installment buying. You're in a hit show one year, and the next year you may be looking for work." He and Jean are determined to raise an unspoiled family in spite of the fact that both boys are recognized wherever they go, and have fan clubs devoted to them. Ronny and Clint are somewhat unusual In at least one respect: neither interrupts when an adult speaks. Both give credit to their father for their acting ability. Young Clint, as all his fans know, seems to live his role as Mark. How does the young actor give such a convincing performance? Clint says, "Well, my dad helps me a lot to get in the mood. I think hard. When I did the movie about Gentle Ben, I convinced myself that Ben was going to be shot, so I cried. I love Gentle Ben. That's why I can get emotional." His father observed, "Clint is the purest 'method actor' I know." . Ronny also explains how his father helped him: "Dad told me the most important thing in a scene is to think and to listen. The best thing Is to bring the character as close to my real self as possible." (continued) gypy, . r - - , r-m , -, - . v - V.r . . ,,,., i, . A rare treat the four Howards together for breakfait.
