Documentary recalls 'King of Cool' Steve McQueen: King of Cool: 10 p.m. Tuesday, American Movie Classics 411431 By Jay Bobbin Tribune Media Services He was one of the screen's coolest actors. He was also one of its hottest stars. He was Steve McQueen, and there's been no other actor like him. Determined to call his own shots while working within the studio system, the performer who died in 1980 at age 50 is recalled Tuesday in the new American Movie Classics documentary Steve McQueen: King of Cool. Kevin Spacey serves as narrator of the program, which includes a wealth of film clips. Dating back to McQueen's early TV work in the western series Wanted: Dead or Alive and the drama that served as the pilot for The Defenders, they proceed up through his final performances in Tom Horn and The Hunter. literally from birth: his fellow-actor son, Chad, who has made such action fare as Death Ring and Firepower. Says the younger McQueen, "I don't think people of his era realized the impact he had. Even I forget that sometimes. His passing seem to have left a huge void, because I can't think of anybody who's stepped into those shoes. "I like Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise, but I don't think they affect people the same way my father did. When it came to machinery like motorbikes and cars, he did his own stunts. Toward the end, he was trying to move away from this icon." Indeed, since Steve McQueen died 18 years ago, young film fans may be relatively unfamiliar with him. For those would-be admirers, or for those wanting a refresher on his pictures, here's a sampler that offers a good way to catch up.
