THOMPSON'S HARDWARE 1616 BROADWAY - 844-4252 RIVIERA BY CONNIK MENGER Bureau Chief VERO BEACH When Gov. Claude Kirk, on his handshaking rounds, stopped al the press table, during a recent dinner meeting held in his honor at the Riviera Restaurant, I asked him a very unpolitical question. Me: "How is Erika and little Claudia?" I could see that I had touched a vital spot because the "ole guv," beaming and virile, made like a father. Guv: "Claudia is the most perfect, adorable, most beautiful baby I ever saw. We've never changed her diapers. She's sweet, Intelligent and Ocean E Jupiter DIG DOLLAR 2701 Old Dixie Hwy Riviera slYOU MORE.... I'm all Involved in the world of Claudia." Speaking about "my beautiful wife, Erika," Gov. Kirk again enthused and told how he spent "long hours Int rylng to explain to Erika the workings of our government" and the necessity of political campaigns and the present need for a change to Dick Nixon. Old Guv Is a swashbuckler, and it is not difficult to believe that in his courtship he completely overwhelmed the lovely Erika. There are two Connies in this office, Connie Bishop, my able and alert assistant, and yours truly. C.B. solved the dilemma the other day she left this note In my typewriter: "Dear Connie: I feel like I'm writing notes to myself. Why don't we call me "Charlie" it suits my personality. I-iye. Stay sweet." Well, "Charlie" it Is. "Charlie" has a sparkling and effervescent a personality as a glass of Sprite, especially when she's hot onto a story. "Charlles's" beat Is the sheriff's department, Police and court house, and when she's onto something, she rushes breathlessly Into the office: "Boy, oh Boy, have I got a We check out the story and Charlie begins pounding It out with dancing eyes and delighted chortles. You know something, we need more grandfathers. Do you know, one of the magic charms of boyhood is having a Grampa with whom a boy can talk, whittle, fish and explore the simple things of nature. A Grampa who says, "When I was a boy . . ." and continues with the most audacious adventures of his boyhood escapades. Our neighbor, Frank Robinson, a retired merchant seaman, was adopted by my children as an "honorary grandpa" since they do not have one. He's wonderful with the children. Then there are the gentle folk like the Rev. and Mrs. D. L. Lyall, Whispering Palms, who quietly and unobtrusively go about their kind acts without fanfare. A soft knock at the door and: "I heard you were 111, Is there anything we can do to help? Here Is some fruit, It may help you feel better." These are the quiet souls that give solid fabric to the tapestry of life. mm U.S. CHOICE . . . WESTERN BEEF 400K CHUCK ROAST For the man who desires real comfort underfoot!
