To keep this schedule, the usual holidays, Thanksgiving Day and Election Day, will provide four-day weeks automatically. In addition, markets will be closed Nov. 11, Veterans Day, an Wednesday, Nov. 20. Prices were Irregularly lower on the American Stock Exchange. Volume was 6.29 million shares compared with 4.73 million Tuesday. The exchange's Index was down 7 cents at $30.53. The most-active issue was Standard Metals, off 1 at 10. Trading was heavy. Most of the market price ln-dlcaters were higher, but an over-whelming advantage for gains versus losses was chipped away throughout most of the session, leaving the advance-decline figures in minus territory. The Dow Jones Industrial average rose 1.31 to 952.39. The In the first half -hour, the average was up 5.78. As usual on a Thursday following a Wednesday recess to catch up with paperwork, pen-tup demand boomed turnover. Volume was 17.65 million shares compared with 12.34 million Tuesday. The market had a powerful psychological Impetus at the start from various reports that a breakthrough toward peace in Vietnam was now Imminent. As the day wore on, however, the optimism was dampened by news reports. Trading totals boomed, however, due both to a procession of big blocks resulting from overnight orders and to the original bullishness. After the market close came news that Sinclair and Atlantic Richfield had reached agreement to merge, subject to the approval of directors and shareholders. Atlantic Richfield, which was seventh most active stock, rose37$to 104. IBM was among the active stocks, falling iy4 to 307. It dropped 5 points at Its opening and was tne most-active stock for a while. Brokers said selling was generated by a published report that IBM was planning a new line that might djsrupt the growth of computer leasing. Llng-Temco-Vought, which reported a sharp drop In earnings recently, also was very active and dropped 6 to 93.
