Abridged, four hours, Random House Audiobooks, $24. With patience, this is a rewarding listen. When tape No. 3 went kerflooey in the player, I unwound, straightened, untangled and rewound the tape. I had to find out what happened to Oscar and Lucinda at the Chinese gambling den in Sydney. This story set in mid-19th-century Australia gets off to a tedious start that introduces Oscar and Lucinda with enough depth to pay off at the end. Oscar, the son of a fundamentalist minister, gambles with his beliefs and his cafsh to a point of ruin. Lucinda is a gambler of another sort, a woman out to break the shackles imposed by men. Once Oscar and Lucinda come together, the story swells with a specific power only to explode in a heartbreaking ending. Ralph Fiennes is the very able reader who also plays Oscar in the current film adapted from this book. m b. Being Earnest - . , iA--- - w E Schuster, $18. This is the third Alien Voices audio play from Star Trek cast members. This audio-books troupe formed in 1996 previously recorded The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and the Jules Verne classic Journey to the Center of the Earth. Those two are superior to The Lost World, recorded at a Star Trek convention last March, only if you picture Mason as Humbert. Irons' work on this audio book serves as an example of how a perfect choice can ensure classic status. Listening to Humbert's growing desperation and frustration with his doomed lust is a journey also marked by humor, an acid wit and a poetic frailty that isn't soon forgotten. dows down, a deputy stared over at me as Humbert's uncensored pain poured from my car like taunts from a growing mob. . "... oh, my darling Lolita." ; Ah, but I am not an audio books coward! I refused to cut the volume as we the law and I sat through a lifetime at a red lijjht in a town where houses and trailers would empty in a stampede to build a bonfire to melt a fountain of dirty audio books. As the cop glanced over at me he didn't look like a Nabokov mail I thought, "Oh, Humbert, liinfc I know how tortured your jdurney was." b '. 7S Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Be?d by Jeremy Irons.
