Jillian Villar's hope in introducing lacrosse to girls at Stuart's St. Michael's Independent School is that they would carry a basic knowledge of the sport's fundamentals into their first match. It looks like the players are fast learners. St. Michael's played its first girls lacrosse match Monday and defeated John I. Leonard 13-5. "The girls just did a wonderful job, especially playing against a high school team," said Villar, who coaches the team with Casey Wilson and Will Chung. "I couldn't have asked for a better team. They're great athletes." St. Michael's squad consisted of seventh- and eighth-graders. Meredith Lazarus led St. Michael's with nine points, while Toniann Panetta was named the outstanding defensive player. The squad's debut comes just over a year after St. Michael's fielded its first boys team. "I think (lacrosse) is going to grow like crazy," said Villar, who played lacrosse at St. Edward's. "It's definitely a growing sport and it's a great sport for college." The girls will next face St. Footballcheerleading Martin County YMCA flag football: Round robin play beginning April 10. I A week ago, Sheffield was limping around with his ' r injured big toe and creaky back, and there was talk of f his possibly starting the season on the disabled list, f Now, he's killing the ball. ' " "I think it's just a credit to how good a hitter he Js," Marlins second baseman Craig Counsell said. ""He could have five home runs right now, seriously, ' in like 30 at-bats." Sheffield hit two long fly balls Saturday that would Tiave been homers had they not died in the howling Melbourne wind. Add those to the one he hit Friday ? in Kissimmee, the one he hit here last week and - another that fell just short of the 410-foot sign in Kissimmee's center field, and the man is as hot as can -''be. Just in time for the season opener Tuesday. I "I feel a lot better," Sheffield said. "I don't know t how it's going to be, once the season does start, but ' for now I feel all right." HIGHLIGHT: Saturday's 11-1 loss to the Houston Astros included few, if any, Marlins highlights, so the highlight for the day came from a former Marlin. When Astros outfielder Moises Alou was announced as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, the Space Coast Stadium crowd erupted in a standing ovation for the 1997 Marlins MVP. Alou hit a sacrifice fly to left that brought in Tony Eusebio with the 1 1th Houston run of the game. LOWUGHT: Pick one. Could be the grand slam Astros outfielder Dave Clark hit before Rafael Medina recorded an out. Could be the two walks that set that it up. Could be the double Clark hit off Medina in the fourth to give him six RBI for the day. Best pick, though, may be left-handed reliever Kirt Ojala's walk of left-handed-hitting Astros pitcher John Halama in the fifth. Nice. PROSPECT WATCH: First baseman Detrek Lee went 2-for-3 with a single and a bloop double, but it was the out he made that may have been most encouraging. Lee's sixth-inning fly ball to left would have been a home run but for the moody Space Coast Stadium wind, which was blowing in hard from left Saturday and stole two home runs from Martins nght fi elder Gary Sheffield as well. QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I'm not getting any hits, so I migut as well take some away." Marlins outfielder John Cangetosi. who made two sensational catches in left field Saturday, one over the shoulder VYIEie May job on Richard Hidalgo' f y ball to the wall in the fourth.
