18C THE PALM BEACH POST SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 1998 c Around the horn Joe vs. the Volcano Yankees manager Joe Torre had better watch his back. Owner George Steinbrenner has given him the dreaded vote of confidence. "I hope Joe doesn't feel pressure because nothing has changed. Look at our payroll last year ($66 million, now at $70 million) and there was no pressure. My relationship with Joe might be the best I've had with a manager." Twenty-nine? I think I faced him in '83 or '84." MARK MCGWIRE, Cardinals, on Devil Rays pitcher Rolando Arrojo, who claims to be 29. TRAINING o)o)lf Spotlight's on... Sterling Hitchcock, Padres The left-hander (10-11, 5.20 ERA in 1997) got the word Friday that he'll start the season in the bullpen. It's not.a demotion, as much as it's a move of necessity. Ed Vosberg is out until May 1, so the Padres need a lefty in the bullpen. "Hitchcock wants to start, but he wants to do what's good for the club," manager Bruce Bochy said. I understand when people think of Maddux, they don't think of Mike. But to be playing baseball for a living is awesome." Maddux was 1-0 with Seattle last season, giving him an 11-4 record over the past four years, but he struggled because of arm trouble. He gave up 20 hits in 12 innings and had a 10.13 ERA. "I came in trying to show the world I'm a little better than I was last year," said Maddux, who signed a minor-league contract with the Expos in January. "I was battling some injuries last season, but I came in healthy this spring." He has a 1.20 ERA in nine games for Montreal, giving up 10 hits in 15 innings. "Mike's had a great spring," pitching coach Bobby Cuellar said. "He's throwing strikes, and he's done the little things we've asked him to do, like being a little quicker to the plate with men on base." Maddux laughs about the fact that people never compare him with Roger Clemens or Mike Mussina, only the younger brother to whom he gave advice on pitching and other subjects when they were growing up in Rancho, Nev. "Now the shoe's on the other foot," he said. "When he talks, I listen." Greg won 8-3, helping Mike get accustomed to pitching in the shadow of his younger brother. Mike, 36, the older of the two by 4Vi years, has a winning record (33-30) and a decent ERA (4.02) with seven big-league clubs. If his name were Smith or Jones, he would be recognized as a reliable veteran reliever, but having a brother who is one of the best pitchers in baseball history brings inevitable unfavorable comparisons. "It's not tough at all (being compared to Greg)," Maddux said Saturday before pitching two perfect innings in Montreal's 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium. Notebook Royals manager Tony Muser had wanted to keep Smith, who was making a comeback after announcing his retirement from Montreal last July. But in Jim Pitts-ley and Brian Bevil the Royals have two younger relievers who are out of options. They would have to be exposed to the waiver wire before the Royals could send them to the minors. Muser asked Smith on Friday if he would accept assignment to Class AAA Omaha. Smith cleaned out his locker sometime Friday night and did not report to practice on Saturday. Baltimore Orioles: Brady Anderson had his left hand wrapped in ice and was receiving electrical stimulation to aid a small bone chip in the fourth metacarpal, which he suffered when hit by a throw from Marlins catcher Charles Johnson during a steal in Thursday's game. Cincinnati Reds: Former shortstop Leo Cardenas has been sentenced to 90 days in prison for beating a man with a baseball bat last year. Cardenas, 59, pleaded guilty last month to a charge that he beat Orenthal Tate, 27, while he sat with Cardenas' wife, Lois, in a parked car Nov. 18. Tate, who works with Cardenas' wife, said the two were talking and eating lunch when Cardenas smashed his car window with the bat Cleveland Indians: Brian Giles hit a two-out homer in the ninth inning and five Cleveland pitchers combined for a two-hitter and 16 strikeouts against the Braves in a 4-3 win at Atlanta. New York Mets: Former Marlin Al Leiter pitched five shutout innings and Tim Spehr homered as the Mets beat Baltimore 4-0. Leiter allowed four hits and one walk in lowering his ERA this spring to 0.60 and improving his record to 2-0.
