Each team can receive up to 10 points for each of the 10 categories, which are totaled to determine the score. Louisiana Tech Tennessee Key player Junior forward Amanda Wilson O ft Junior Chamique Holdsclaw, (18.9 points, 8.8 rebounds) who is touted as the best could have big day against the Lady women's player ever, can shoot from Vols, who have no true center. the outside and can penetrate. Signature play Alisa Burris' spin move to the basket, a pretty bit of footwork 7 that could come in handy against a non-dominating UT post game. The Vols get by because they're so good in transition, but a team with a good inside-outside combination will offer trouble. 7 No Limit Soldier. The new motivational rap song for the Vols, by Master P, usually sung by Holdsclaw and danced to by Randall. Someone should tell Ally McBeal. With five starters averaging in double figures scoring and almost 30 minutes each, there Isn't much need for point production off the bench. But Jamie Scheppman manages to average 18 minutes and 5.1 points. Achilles' Two words: No Holdsclaw. This team is small and very, 2 very quick with a balanced scoring attack. Se-meka Randall stretched out her hands. !; '"I have no gold," she said, examining her naked fingers Saturday at Kemper Arena. "No gold. I want them. Gold, with diamonds to show we won." Women Randall, a freshman from Tennessee, was talking about rings, more specifically, championship rings. Everyone else on her team has at least one, except for her fellow classmates. All Tennessee has to do to get this woman some jewelry is defeat Louisiana Tech in tonight's women's NCAA Division I national championship game. A victory would give the Vols an unprecedented third consecutive title and six overall. "It would be amazing," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. That's a good word to describe the Vols this season. They are 38-0 and would become the first team to go undefeated since Connecticut in 1995. Summitt's first national championship was in 1987, when Tennessee defeated (guess who?) Louisiana Tech. They are the only two teams to have made the NCAA Tournament all 17 seasons. This season, the Vols opened with a 75-61 victory against the Techsters. "They lost 10 games last year, ' and who cares now?" Tech guard Tamisha Jackson said of Tennessee. "We're where we want to be. We have to show what we've learned." Jackson has a point. Three of those losses were to her school. But the question remains as to how it can do what no one else has done THIS season: beat Tennessee. The Vols looked human in their Regional Championship when they had to come back from 12 down and just over seven minutes left to play against North Carolina. Their full-court press wasn't as effective as usual, but against that defense in the semifinals Friday, Arkansas didn't have a chance. "I'm not going to say anybody's unbeatable," Arkansas point guard Christy Smith said. "I'm not going to say the Titanic can't sink." True. We've all seen the movie. Summitt made sure her freshman saw another movie, the HBO documentary filmed on the team last season. She particularly wanted them to watch the scenes of the team crying after losses, especially after Old Dominion when All America Chamique Holdsclaw's sobs echoed off the locker-room walls. Randall watched. The first fime, it bothered her. The second time, she thought it was kind of funny. But she definitely got the message, that it was a situation she didn't want to be a part of. What really got her attention lately were game films. "I realize I have to be a leader every night," Randall said. "It's been tough taking this role. Every night I have to be sky-high. But it's something you don't want to back down from if you're a competitor." Louisiana Tech is no pushover. The Techsters are one of the quickest teams in the country, and like to run, just like Tennessee. The Vols are a bit bigger in the back court, the Techsters have a better inside game. Rebounds, turnovers, points in transition fundamentals will be the key to this matchup. History and tradition won't be Providence's Palm Brack Post Wirt Servica CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Pete Gillen has left Providence to sign a seven-year deal to become Virginia's new basketball coach. V II guna Athletic Director Terry Holland confirmed Gillen's selection Friday night from San Antonio, where he is attending this weekend's NCAA Final Gillen Four. Holland would not divulge financial terms of the contract but it is expected that Gillen's total compensation package will exceed $500,000 a year. Gillen replaces Jeff Jones, who resigned March 15 after eight seasons. There were 28 empty seats in the Alamodome because police confiscated those tickets from scalpers, who also lost $19,000 in cash.
