Call: 561-686-8906 fax: 561-697-8429 By Brian McLaughlin Special to the Palm Beach Post GAINESVILLE Spanish River's Sara Darling is going for the triple crown of distance running. She won the 1600-meter state title last May in Class 6A and won the state cross-country title in November, but she finished third last year in the 3200. - The Pensacola High twins who finished ahead of Darling in the 3200 last year, Jennifer and Ann McGranahan, were at the 55th annual Florida Relays on Saturday, but they were running for the University of Florida and Villan-ova, respectively, which gives Darling, a senior, a clearer path to winning the 3200 this season. Darling asserted herself as the placed third in 14.86 and Jerkita McClorin took fourth in 14.89. The 4x400 team backed up its first-place finish in the preliminaries from a day before too, winning the relay in 3:51.18. Suncoast freshman Erica Whipple won the 100 in 11.70, and ran the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay to set the Florida Relays record in a time of 46.35. Her teammates on the relay were Riunite Carter, Leah Smith and Kristina Rolle. Santaluces' Vincent Wilfork completed a sweep of the throwing events for the Florida Relays by winning the shot put Saturday after winning the discus Friday. He bettered his sixth-place performance in the shot of last early leader for that title, winning the Florida. Relays' 3200 in 11:09.23, which would have won last year's state title by 12 seconds over Jennifer McGranahan. "I'm pretty happy, but I still missed the school record by two seconds," Darling said. "The 1600 is faster than I like, and I've gotten more used to the longer distances since cross-country. I like the longer distances more." Palm Beach Lakes' girls hurdlers picked up where they left off when they set a national record for the 110-hurdle shuttle run Friday. Sharianne Lawson won the 100 hurdles in 14.45, Antoinette Wilks last year by 4 inches. Both of his throws at the Florida Relays were personal bests. "That's what I expected to do," said Wilfork, who had a throw Friday of 166-5 in the discus. "All I've got in my mind now is winning state." His teammates performed well too. Sherrod Coates (14.58) and Arlington Watkins (14.92) took first and third in the 110 hurdles finals. Also, William T. Dwyer pole vaulter Deanna Shuler set a Florida Relays record in the pole vault Saturday, vaulting 11-0. MARCH 26-29, 1998 Now one of the country's top ten boat shows...
