J1 By Andrea Szulszteyn , Special to The Palm Beach Post I ; GAINESVILLE The Flori-I da Gators began spring practice 1-95 to Exit 56, Northlake Blvd., Co West 7 Minutes , switched to defensive end after spending his first three seasons at UM as a defensive tackle. Lawson, 6-foot-2 and 275 pounds, was a defensive end j : l: j uuiing ins udya Lawson at Atlantic High Lawson School, but was moved inside in college. "His body type fits him more at defensive end," Davis said. "He's done some nice things. He doesn't look out of place at all." Only four of the 15 linemen have much experience. By Jorge Milian Palm Beach Post Staff Writer CORAL GABLES' You didn't need to watch the University of Miami's first spring scrimmage on Saturday to realize the Hurricanes' offensive line is sorely lacking in experience. Of the 15 linemen on the roster, only center Ty Wise, tackle Robert Sampson and guards Eric Schnupp and Damond Neely played much last year. Joaquin Gonzalez, Martin Bibla, Ed Wilkins, Brett Romberg and Scott Puckett are expected to be key backups in 1998 despite never having played a down of college football. Greg Laffere, a junior college transfer, also is expected to be a major contributor in his first season. "We've got a long ways to go, but we're going to get there," said offensive line coach Art Kehoe. "I'd be terribly nervous if they weren't eager to be good offensive linemen." Through the first eight practices, the offensive line has struggled. UM coach Butch Davis said he was "disappointed with the inconsistencies" among the linemen during Saturday's two-hour scrimmage. "We can't go forward until we correct the little things," Davis said. Help is on the way. Junior Richard Mercier, who started each game in his freshman and sophomore seasons, missed all of last year with a knee injury, but is expected back at the beginning of Johnson Palmer more experience," Palmer said. It may not look like anyone has gained Spurrier's confidence. He has not given any indication who the starting quarterback will be heading into fall practice and may not if no one starts playing well. The wide receivers without Jacquez Green and Jamie Richardson have looked inexperienced, dropping passes and running the wrong routes. "We haven't seen anything exceptional," Spurrier said. "The offense still has a long way to go." The defense, on the other hand, has looked sharp despite several changes at key positions. Cornerbacks Fred Weary and Elijah Williams have graduated, leaving the defensive backfield with several new starters. Safety Tony George has moved to cornerback and Dock Pollard and Cedric Warren have been splitting time at the other position. Rod Graddy has taken over at the other safety, joining Teako Brown. The front seven looks as strong as it did last year, and the linebackers could be much improved with Belle Glade's Johnny Rutledge moving to the middle and Jevon Kearse a regular starter. In the two scrimmages, the defense has accumulated 11 sacks and scored two touchdowns. The offense has not made it into the red zone. Lawson started six games last season but is running witn tne second team at defensive end. "It's a good move for me because it's where I've wanted to play all along," Lawson said. "It took me a while, but I'm getting used to end again." Noteworthy: Among those attending Saturday's scrimmage was former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms and his son, Christopher. Christopher Simms, a senior-to-be at Ramapo (N.J.) High School, will be one of the nation's top high school quarterbacks and is considering attending UM. . . Redshirt freshman Kenny Kelly had the best day among UM's three quarterbacks, connecting on 9-of-12 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Starter Scott Covington completed 6-of-llfor28 yards. " Through two scrimmages and heading into Saturday's Orange and Blue game, the defense has overshadowed and outplayed the offense. Gators It could happen again on Saturday as quarterback Doug Johnson (shoulder) and third-string quarterback Tim Olmstead (groin) have injuries that could sideline .them for the final spring practice. L "Jesse (Palmer) and (Larry) fcchart are the only quarterbacks Hght now," coach Steve Spurrier fcaid. "Doug is going to rest his fehoulder first, then possibly have kn MRI if we have to." ; Even with Palmer and Richart .taking snaps, the offense has ijlooked lethargic even though Spurrier's aim was to give his flayers a little more experience. , "One thing he wanted to do this spring was give the quarterbacks more confidence, throwing khe ball a little more and giving us fSeminoles can't spare fextra QB i By Paul Rothman Special to the Palm Beach Post t: ., TALLAHASSEE The Flori-j da State football team was dealt a f blow at spring practice this week i when sophomore quarterback I Marcus Outzen sustained a sepals rated shoulder. Outzen was coming off his best performance as a Seminole, hitting 9-of-12 passes for 161 yards in FSU's first spring scrimmage. Outzen, who separated his Outzen throwing shoul- der after beine sacked bv sopho imore defensive end Jamal Reynolds, will miss the remainder of spring football season. Seminoles "I'm trying not to worry about Outzen said. "It reallv stinks it; that this haH to hannen to me now. tSpring was going to be big for me." As a result of Outzens's injury. coach Bobby Bowden has placed his remaining quanerDacKs, um Kendra and Chris Weinke, in cri-ppn non-contact iersevs until next Saturday's spring game. Hp should be verv confident because he was having a real good " Rowden said of Outzen. "It's a shame he got hurt, because jit really looked like he was going ;to make a battle out of that thing. I : "But now we can't afford to I lose another one now. When you jhave three (quarterbacks) you have a little room to work, but now Jwe can't gamble on it." The Seminoles have the week-end off because Bowden moved (Saturday's scheduled scrimmage Sat Doak Campbell Stadium to t Monday because of several play- ers' track commitments. I During Friday's practice, sophomore safety Derrick Gibson im-fpressed coaches with his second '"interception return for a touch-down this spring. T "Derrick Gibson had a good interception today." Bowden said. "There are some good things hap-fpcning defensively out there, but fyou can see the difference this year with all the fifth-year seniors Jgone. Now we're playing with I younger people who have the I same ability, but the consistency is 'not there yet" ACC NEWS i 561-964-COLF FOR MORE INFORMATION -1 XW4 Blackwall J99 P155 80H13 . . 20.95 . . 20.95 , . 22.95 . . 22.95 . . 22.95 . . 25.95 . . 25.95 . . 25.95 . . 25 95 P175B0R13 P18580R13.
