Statistical leaders FLORIDA PANTHERS By Brian Biggane Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Kirk McLean hasn't been around forever; it just seems that way. In 1989-90, when McLean was 23, he led all NHL goaltenders in games (63) and minutes played (3,739). Four years later, he carried the Vancouver Canucks to the Stanley Cup finals. Now, four years after that, he's a Florida Panther. Panthers After playing his first 10 seasons with one team, he's played for three in his 11th. And the question is being asked: Is McLean on his way out at age 31? "I don't think you could ever say that," Panthers goaltending coach Billy Smith said. "Most goal-tenders don't even start winning Stanley Cups until they're 30-31 years old. He should be just coming into his own." Bryan Murray didn't try to tell people he had landed the next John Vanbiesbrouck when he acquired McLean for Ray Sheppard on Tuesday. He needed a goal-tender to put up for the expansion draft, and McLean filled that need. And if Vanbiesbrouck heads elsewhere as a free agent this summer, well, then McLean is insurance until Kevin Weekes is ready to be the starter. Still, Murray had said only days earlier that if Vanbiesbrouck left, he wanted an upper-echelon goalie to "protect" Weekes as he developed at his own pace. Did McLean fit his criterion of being among the top 50 percent of NHL goalies? "I would say he's in the 16-17 range," Murray conceded. "He's technically sound, and he squares off pretty well. He hasn't played much in awhile, and he came through situations in both Vancouver and Carolina that weren't the best. "We think Billy can help him.
