Other married couples work for the city, but the Wrights' arrangement has resulted in some awkward circumstances. For instance, one of Mike's assistants usually approves Karen's travel expense reports. The couple also often travels and eats together at the city's expense in their roles as Graham's representatives. In January 1997, they went with Graham to President Clinton's inauguration. Overall, Mike Wright went on 22 trips in 1996 and 1997, at a cost of $11,155. Karen Wright went on 15 trips, almost all of them with Graham, at a cost of $7,447. The pair have also dined in the same group 24 times in the last two years, according to expense accounts. Saying that might be a "complication," Graham said she may suggest when they both eat while on city business, only one gets reimbursed. Staff writer Joel Engelhardt contributed to this story. About 11 a.m. Adams arrived at the Denny's parking lot where answers only to one person the mayor and others don't matter. He has been taking this approach with Graham's backing since she hired him in 1994. Graham can't afford to lose a strong administrator because her administration faces major actions next month: Voters will cast ballots to decide the fate of Municipal Auditorium, and City Place will begin to take shape. Moreover, next year's mayoral race is getting under way. If she keeps Wright, Graham should be able to focus on politics and her vision. And she can keep her executive assistant. After difficulties with two prior assistants, Graham hired Karen Wright, 47, a legal secretary at a downtown law firm. Paid $36,961 a year, Karen Wright is the mayor's liaison to neighborhood groups and city boards. Easygoing and energetic, she is well-liked and accessible, say those who deal with her. The Wrights and Graham concede theirs is an unusual situation but assert there's nothing illegal or wrong about it.
