"I wouldn't be ; surprised if you find both Bush and MacKay picking someone- who has never held office. That way they don't have to answer for someone else's voting record." ers. Also on MacKay's list is University of South Florida president Betty Castor, a former education commissioner who, once considered running for governor herself. First term U.S. Rep. Jim Davis of Tampa, Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, NationsBank executive Alex Sink and Palm Beach County Commissioner Carol Roberts round out MacKay's informal list. Roberts was surprised that went so far as to say, based on the notion of leaving the country, that Bush and Feeney wanted to abolish Social Security and Medicare. Another name topping the list is Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas. "He has an incredibly bright future," said one MacKay adviser of Penelas. "He has terested if they think the campaign is going down." One favorite of MacKay's is said to be Orange County Chairman Linda Chapin. Moderate in her views, she is also a successful politician in the Interstate 4 cor (that again, Bush looked for a Mayor Glenda Hood and U.S. Rep. Tillie Fowler of Jacksonville. House Speaker Daniel Webster and state Sen. Jim Scott of more experienced, better respected running mate for the 1998 campaign. Palm Beach County Sheriff Bob Neumann, who has said" repeatedly that he's happy Fort Lauderdale are also being mentioned by Bush's advisers even though both are long shots. MacKay also is taking his time. The lieutenant governor is the most involved No. 2 in the state's short history of running mates. Unlike most lieutenant governors, MacKay has been given substantial assignments and has often been described as Chiles' chief operating officer. Reluctant to talk about possible candidates, MacKay is no less pressured than Bush to make a careful choice. One thing that makes Bush's selection easier is that there is no shortage of people interested in joining him on the ticket. Bush is ahead in the polls and ambitious politicians see the job as a potential sure thing. Bedeviled by a perception that his campaign is in trouble, MacKay is likely to have a harder time finding a prominent candidate. Things are even worse for former state Sen. Rick Dantzler of Winter Haven and state Rep. Keith Arnold of Fort Myers. Both are challenging MacKay for the Democratic nomination. Dantzler is consider a dark horse. Arnold is a very long shot who may not get past the July qualifying period when candidates officially register with the state. "Finding a running mate can be very, very difficult if people in your own party have any doubt that you can win," said Susan MacManus, a University of South Florida political scientist. Already bruised from his previous picks, Bush is said to be seriously considering a judge, a business leader or a sheriff someone who would be very safe. That's why Neumann's name, despite his lack of interest, is likely to remain on Bush's list. Also being considered is former Secretary of State Jim Smith, who ran against Bush in the; 1994 Republican primary. Since then. Bush and Smith have beceme friends and Smith has helped raise money for Bush's campaign. , Among the others on Bush's list -Are former state Sen. Curt Kiser, now a lobbyist, Orlando tiffiSi1"!
