THE PALM BEACH POST SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1998 5A . - Suspects' parents offer sympathy to girls' families Pill appears to cause few side effects, FDA says f f eral officials have dropped plans to pursue federal charges against the boys. In Jonesboro, some people want justice, some revenge, and some do not know what to demand from a crime so unsettling. The people U the chapel were urged to hold pnto their faith, even as they try to understand how this could have happened. "God did not leave Jonesboro THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Two classmates embrace as parents look on Friday following the funeral of Natallie Brooks, one of four students killed Tuesday. potence can result from organic causes, such as diabetes, arterio sclerosis, prostate ailments or as the side effect of medication, or it can stem from psychological factors. The drug was tested and found effective among both groups. Health officials stressed that the pill is not designed for healthy men seeking to increase or improve their sexual activity. ;t Dr. Harin Padma-Nathan, director fo the Male Clinic in Santa Monica, Calif., and clinical associate professor of urology at the University of Southern California, said Viagra was effective in up to 89 percent of those whose dysfunction was the result of psychogenic problems and up to 70 percent in those whose impotence resulted from physical causes. The pill should not be used more than once a day, the FDA said. FDA officials said Viagra, known chemically as sildenafil citrate, appeared to cause few side effects. PILL From LA problem," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's center for drug evaluation and research. "Nothing works for everyone, but this will be another choice, a medication that can be taken conveniently." The drug, manufactured by New York-based Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, is expected to be available in pharmacies within a month, the FDA said. The company has estimated the wholesale price at about $7 a pill. It is the first of several oral medications for impotence in the pipeline to be approved by federal regulators, who moved rapidly, licensing the drug only six months after the company submitted its application. Drug industry analysts have estimated Viagra's sales could reach $500 million by 2003. Between 10 million and 20 million men are believed to experience impotence at some time during their lives, particularly middle-aged or elderly men. Im FUNEUALS From 1A meens, read from Revelation 21:4, trying to celebrate the life of the little girl, and ease a collective pain that, some people here say, will never really go away. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes," the minister quoted. "There will be no more death, or mourning, or crying, or pain. For the old order of things has passed away." j If not passed, at least, much has changed. As Paige's funeral began with the taped voice of LeAnn Rimes singing How Do I Live Without You, Andrew Golden, 11, and Mitchell Johnson, 13, sat on their bunks in the juvenile detention wing of the Craighead County Jail, one reading a Bible, the other staring out a window. They are charged with five counts of murder and 10 counts of battery, for the people they killed and wounded in a shooting spree that classmates said was prompted when Johnson was spurned by a girl he liked. Through their son's lawyer, Andrew's parents reached out to Paige's family and the other victims, offering sympathy, but no explanation for a tiling that most people here say they still cannot really believe. The two suspects are so young that there are not even laws on the books in Arkansas to punish them beyond incarceration in a juvenile detention facility until their 18th birthdays. But the lawyer came short of conceding his client's guilt "At this point, Mr. and Mrs. Golden simply do not have all the answers," said Val Price, the public defender who is representing Andrew in juvenile court proceedings. "They would like to explain and make it clear for ev on Tuesday," Crerneens told 500 mourners at the funeral of Paige. "God wants us to be a beacon of hope, light and love to a world that needs it so badly. The healing cannot begin until we forgive." f In the Farmer's Union funeral home, a gleaming white casket, closed, sat covered with a spray of pink carnations and white daisies: A red shirt from Westside Middle School was draped across it, near a photograph of Paige in her basketball uniform, surrounded by trophies. More than 500 people packed the chapel and foyer and a few even stood outside, straining to hear. Some hugged, some just gently touched the shoulders of their neighbors. A group of paramedics, some who admitted they were stunned by what they saw in the blood-spattered schoolyard, wore their uniforms to the service. Students from Westside Middle School came dressed in red-and-black, the colors of the Westside War Natalie Paige As the funerals conclude today, and townspeople in this religious city return to their churches on Sunday for their usual services there are more than 90 churches here, almost one for every 5,000 residents Jonesboro has to try to resume some routines. But even everyday life here now is lined with barbs. Someone must clean out Shannon Wright's desk at West-side. Someone has to take over and teach things like sentence construction, using Mrs. Wright's grade book to see who was passing, who was struggling. The fire alarm at the school, which was triggered to lure the students and teachers outside, has been disconnected. It will stay that way for a year. Classes will have one or two more empty desks. Yearbook photos are already shot, books already gone to press. They will show the faces of children as yet unmarked by any of this, the faces of two young boys who, before this, were just two more boys, grinning into a camera. riors. But Scott Johnson, the father of Mitchell, conceded his son's guilt. "As hard as it is for me to say, my son is guilty," he told CBS Radio Friday. "This is a horrific, horrulc tragedy."
