TGIF The Palm Beach Post MARCH 27, 1998 Page 9 'Nice Guy' Chan cooks, but 'Deedles' dawdles riff on it, and why have your surfers out of water if they so easily adapt to their surroundings? Rated PG (language, sexual innuendo and situations, gross humor). Robert Philpot, Fort Worth Star-Telegram bourne TV cooking show. Chan becomes a knight in shining armor to a TV newscaster played by Gabrielle Fitzpatrick. (PG-13, pervasive action violence, some sensuality and drug content) Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times. it's going, and provides too few surprises on the way and too little payoff at the end. It's harmless, but it's not exactly rewarding. The Deedles are 18-year-old surfer-dude twins Stew (Steve Van Wormer) and Phil (Paul Walker) who are mistaken for rookie park rangers. Phil, the marginally better-looking one, quickly falls for a pretty ranger (A.J. Langer); Stew, the marginally smarter one, sets to work trying to solve the park's prairie-dog problem. The p-dogs, as the Deedles call 'em, are just a front for a plot by a disgruntled ex-ranger (Dennis Hopper, who else?) to, um, geyser-nap Old Faithful. Van Wormer and Walker, who don't look much like twins, are likable enough guys, and screenwriter Jim Herzfeld (who in better days co-wrote Tapeheads) gives them plenty of boss surfer dialogue. But the movie misses way too many bits: Why have Hopper (who does most of his acting sitting in a chair) essentially reprise his Speed role if you're not going to Now showing at: Lake Worth 8, Wellington Market Place, Okee Square, Jupiter 18, Promenade Plaza 8, Delray 18, Movies at Boynton Beach, Movies at Town Center, Mission Bay, Deerfield Mall, Fox Festival, Coral Springs Six. Mr. Nice Guy is a lot like a zillion other Chan films; what's amazing is how Chan's sunny personality, his graceful dexterity plus lots of inventive stunts and action sequences keep the formula fresh. Directed by Samo Hung and featuring the work of Chan's own team of stunt coordinators, Mr. Nice Guy seems as much choreographed as it is filmed. It has the movement and structure of an exceptionally vigorous ballet, giving it a terrific sense of energy and unity. Hung's bravura sense of style and pace are crucial in making Mr. Nice Guy one of Chan's best.
