For I , - -, iirXir!' r ' ; trr- ' h,y v - ir The Associated Press GARLAND, Texas When 12:01 a.m. passed and God didn't break into the programming on Channel 18 as predicted, the religious leader who brought his followers from Taiwan had a simple message: He'd been wrong. Chen Heng-ming had said that God would appear on Channel 18 across the country to alert humanity to his impending arrival on Earth at 10 a.m. on March 31. "Because we did not see God's message on Channel 18 tonight, my predictions of God arriving on March 31 can be considered nonsense," Chen said early Wednesday. "But don't call us liars," he added. "Keep watching." His statement ended an odd day of religion and spectacle in this pleasant Dallas suburb, which Chen and his "zhen dao," or True Way, movement, known as God's Salvation Church, said they selected because "Garland" sounds like "God's land." It came almost exactly a year after the Heaven's Gate sect committed mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Heaven's Gate members said they believed that, if they "shed their containers," they would be picked up by a spaceship hidden by a passing comet. Thirty-eight people died. Implied in the media and police attention given to Chen was the notion that church members might take drastic action if God didn't appear. However Chen and his folloflrers always insisted they had no plans to harm themselves. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS True Way leader Chen Heng-ming predicted God would appear at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday on Channel 18 across the U.S. man who has acted as a liaison between the Salvation Church and both the media and the city, said church members1 and "Teacher Chen" were exhausted. "He wanted to spread the word of his religion and he did," Hsu said. "He said it last night: The world is now paying attention." Chen said his 140 followers are now free to find their own routes to happiness. He also pledged to "take responsibility" for the financial losses they sustained by giving up their jobs, though he did not elaborate. He said he would remain in Garland. Others planned returns to Taiwan. Authorities removed blocks of barricades and traffic cones during the night, returning the neighborhood to some semblance of show narrated by the Rev. Tom Weber.
