Edgar Renteria went 2-for-5 to raise his spring average to .302 Mark Kotsay, batting in the leadoff spot for the second straight day, walked twice and scored both times. LOWLIGHT: The Marlins made three errors, including the third of the spring by Gold Glove catcher Charles Johnson, who didn't make any last season. Renteria and first baseman Ryan Jackson made the others. . . . Starting pitcher Livan Hernandez gave up two home runs in an otherwise solid six innings. The first was a monstrous first-inning solo HR that B.J. Surhoff hit onto the batting cage roof beyond the right-field fence. The second was a wind-blown two-run HR by Jeffrey Hammonds with two out in the sixth Cliff Floyd pinch-hit in the eighth and struck out for the fifth straight at-bat. Floyd has 25 strikeouts this spring in 61 at-bats. PROSPECT WATCH: Left-handed reliever Jesus Sanchez pitched a perfect seventh inning to drop his spring ERA to 2.45. . . . Third baseman Josh Booty struck out twice but made an incredible diving stop and throw on a Joe Carter grounder in the second inning. QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It's a pretty small town, so something like this is a big deal." "But we picked the guys who are right ; for this team right now." i Right-handed closer Jay Pow-ejl leads the bullpen in experience, with more than two years of service in the majors. He'll be joined by fellow right-handers Antonio Alfonseca and Oscar Henriquez, as well as lefties Gabe Gonzalez, Kirt Ojala, Vic Darensbourg and Jesus Sanchez. t "A lot of people in Long Beach (Calif.) are going to be pumped tonight," said ecstatic rookie Gonzalez, before rushing to the phone, perhaps to call everyone in his ; hometown with the good news. And as hard as spring's final cuts can be to make, it helped eyland to see how excited Gonzalez was. t '.' "You have days like you had yesterday, as tough as it was," Leyland said. "But it makes it all worthwhile when you can tell a kid like that he's going to the big leagues." -. On top of the world and the order: As he is about most things, Mark Kotsay was subdued in his reaction to winning the starting center fielder's job. t . "I'm pumped up," Kotsay said. "But one of the biggest things for me is to try and stay humble, and always think of the other possibility," Kotsay batted first in the lineup the last two games, and he knows that's a distinct possibility for the start of the season, especially with the way Cliff Floyd has struggled in that role all spring. , "I just want to get on base and score runs," said Kotsay, who hit leadoff in the Arizona Fall League last year. "Just work on working counts, selecting pitches and smart baserunning." v More elation: Kotsay's roommate at the Melbourne Comfort Inn had a good night Wednes- I AL'CpVIIII I C IIWfTCDfcJ ATleOhJ A I im A Fernandez is on 60-day disabled list, an insurance policy will pay up to 80 percent of his salary, depending on how much he pitches. Ryan Jackson did the math, discovered that all but 13 position players had been cut, and realized he had made the team. Spehr hit his fourth home run of the spring, a two-run HR off Atlanta Braves starter Greg Maddux, during Thursday's exhibition game against the Braves, which ended in a 3-3 tie after 12 innings. In 30 spring training plate appearances, Spehr is hitting .430 with eight RBI. , Now he will try to carry his hjtting success this spring over to the regular season, where he has struggled the past few seasons. More roster moves: The Mets voided the contract of infiel-deroutfielder Chad Fonville because of a pre-existing shoulder injury. Fonville, a free agent, signed a minor league contract with the Mets on March 14. He spent most of the 1997 season in the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization before being traded to the Chicago White Sox. Also, Mets infielder Shawn Gilbert was reassigned to the minor league camp. During that season, Spehr, who had surgery to remove a benign testicular tumor, batted .091 in 63 games. Last season, Spehr batted .171 in 17 games for Kansas City before being released by the Royals on May 28. After signing with the Braves, he spent much of the year playing at Class AAA Richmond before playing in eight games with Atlanta. He signed with New York as a six-year minor league free agent in January and was one of four catchers vying to fill in for injured starter Todd Hundley, who is not expected to return until after the All-Star break because of elbow surgery.
