If II mam ; V Stall photo by Barbara Montgomery Fishing Lines Often Can Harm or Kill Pelicans Just about every living thing in Florida goes through a change when winter arrives. Even the brown pelican has its own "season." Tis not a time for the creature to be jolly, however. It becomes time for the endangered bird to be hooked, lined and mangled by fishermen in pursuit of gamefish. Often such entanglement means death. "The pelicans aren't coming in yet," West Palm Beach's Bonnie Findlay said. "But we get them. We always get them." F.indlay, along with her brother, operates a sanctuary in the area for injured birds. Not only do they get pelicans torn up by hook and line, but , sea gulls, loons and terns, among others, make their way through channels to the 30-acre plot west of town. "Right now we have wall-to-wall loons," Findlay said. "They're dying all up and down the coast. We're not sure what it is, they may be starving." Findlay, formerly a surgical nurse for . a veterinarian in Fort Lauderdale, will attempt to help determine the cause of the loon problem. But she will also remain just as concerned over the brown pelicans. "It's very important since they are on the endangered list," Findlay said. "They are making a comeback, but, still more work is needed to get people acquainted with what they need to do when they hook a pelican." Studies by various state and private concerns have reported that hooks and lines cause 85 per cent of accidental pelican deaths. It's not an uncommon sight to a Floridian who has fished with some regularity to see one being reeled in from a bridge, boat or pier. Kaaren Cornelius has worked at the Juno Pier for more than two months, and she's already seen two birds get all wrapped up. "It usually happens when live bait is around," Cornelius said. "They fly so close and go after baits being thrown out by our fishermen. Some will even come on the pier and pick up a hooked bait." Eddie Gamen, who has worked at the Lake Worth Pier for 15 years, said he's even seen the birds pick up a feather or a spoon. "We get 10 to 15 injured birds a year," Gamen said. "Sometimes more. That's both pelicans and sea gulls." More than that are entangled, however. Gamen's figures include only the ones whose injuries require medical attention. "If a bird is simply entangled in the line, he can be reeled in and taken care of and released," Finley said. "But if it is hooked, antibiotic treatment is preferred." A study by ornithologist Pete Van Allen in association with the Sun-coast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores reported that even the smallest of injuries may have serious consequences. "Some minor injuries have left birds crippled - and without proper care these birds will die," Allen's report says. So what can you do? Another concerned organization, the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, has outlined some simple steps to follow when handling hooked or tangled birds, especially the brown pelican. Reel in your line smoothly and firmly. Be careful not to break the line. Grab the bill. Close it and hold it securely in one hand. The inside edges of the bill are sharp but unless you rub your hand up and down the edge, a pelican bite will not hurt you. Fold up the wings into their normal position and hold them there. This quiets the bird and should stop it from struggling. Turn the bird's head around so it lies along the middle of its back (that's how pelicans sleep) and the bird is easier to handle. Tuck the pelican under your armpit or between your legs while removing the fishing line and hook. But keep a firm grip on the bird's bill. Remove the fishing line - every inch of it. Any remnants can cause the bird to get snared in its roost, causing starvation. Do not throw the line in the water to foul up another bird or get wrapped around a boat's propeller shaft. If a hook is embedded in the flesh, try to cut off the barb and back the hook out - or cut off the loop end of the hook and push it on through. Do not rip the hook out. If it is possible for you to do so, contact your humane society when a bird has been damaged by a hook. Usually they will pick the bird up and it will make its way to a sanctuary for treatment and recuperative care. If the bird hasn't been hooked and is simply entangled with line, release it if all the fishing paraphernalia has been removed. "It's usually the young ones that have the most problems," Findlay said. "They've just been born during the summer and they're hungry and not as used to people." Some of the smarter ones learn to keep their distance. 3LD mm Double Belted RADIALS STEEL DELTED RADIAL Whitewalls o itJuu sizes ;t.i3 'in 59 F O R sizis 14. AI71I3 BK7I 13 plu.
