Tony Graffanino, Atlanta Braves With mainstay Mark Lemke gone, the righthander will get a chance to platoon with left-handed hitting Keith Lockhart at second base. It shouldn't be too big of an adjustment for the 25-year-old though. He saw significant playing time at the end of last season Lemke tore ligaments in his right ankle on Aug. 20. Maybe he can be a bat boy The Indians released former NL All-Star Carlos Garci on Wednesday, but manager Mike Hargrove isn't , completely down on him. "We looked at Carlos at the second-base position and felt we had better talen ahead of him. We looked at him in a utility role and felt the same thing. He was good in the clubhouse and good on the field. He just didn't fit here. I'm nnt nn nf thnp who believes the crass is always greener somewhere else. I've heard about players who wish they'd never left their teams when they had a good thing going." CHUCK FINLEY, Angels pitcher, who is entering his TRAINING 12th season with the team. LUCIE The last time New York Mets pitcher Masato Yoshii saw the St. Louis Cardinals, he picked up his first spring training victory. On Wednesday, the Cardinals handed the Japanese rookie his first defeat. St. Louis hit combined for three home runs off Yoshii and Mets reliever Dennis Cook, a former Marlin, to snap a seven game losing streak with a 4-1 victory at Thomas J. White Stadium. Cardinals center fielder Ron Gant hit a solo homer off Yoshii in the fourth and in-fielders Brian Hunter and David Bell each homered off Cook in the seventh inning. In six innings Yoshii, who is trying to earn a spot in the Mets starting rotation, gave up five hits and two runs while striking out two. Mets manager Bobby Valentine said the fifth spot in the starting rotation remains undecided. "(Yoshii) looks like what he was advertised to be," Valentine said. "If he gets the ball up, he's going to get hit. If he makes his pitches, he's going to keep us in a lot of ball games." Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa used Wednesday's game to take another look at right-handed pitcher Cliff Politte, who was St. Louis' minor league pitcher of the year last season. Politte pitched 4Vs innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out six to improve to 4-1 in five outings. 0 0 0 Pratt c 1 2 1 Baerga 2b 0 0 0 JFranco p 0 0 0 Orsulak ph 0 0 0 Castillo c 0 I 0 Cook p 1 2 I Tatum3b 0 0 0 Ordonez ss 0 0 0 Gilbert ss BAD Voshif D Cairo 2b 3 0 0 0 Silvestri 2b 0 0 0 0 Totals 33 2 2 Texas 103 103 000 - 0)0 000 00) -2 Politte, who went a com-: bined 15-2 last year while ; playing for Class AA Arkansas and Class A Prince Wil-: liam, drew praise from LaR ussa for Wednesday's outing, but LaRussa remained mum about the 24- ? year-old non-roster invitee'?' chances of making the squad. "It was another impres? sive outing. When he's fresh' he's very tough," LaRussa said. "You don't usually give a guy a start this late in the spring unless he's got a shot, f but that doesn't guarantee'; you anything." B Short work day: It was a brief outing for Cardi-nals reliever Rigo Beltran, ' who faced one batter in""' Wednesday's game. Beltran; -7 a left-hander, came in to face Mets left-hander Matt Fran- 1 co with one out in the bottom j of the eighth. ' ; Beltran forced Franco to j fly out to center field. ! "We wanted to bring him j against a left-hander and that j was the only lefthander they were going to use," LaRussa J said. The team also named right-hander Felix Rodriguez its close and . released Hector Carrasco. Atlanta Braves: Brad Clontz, a member of the bullpen since 1995, was placed on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Clontz was 5-1 with one save and a 3.75 ERA last season. The side-arming right-hander went 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 1 1 innings this spring. Colorado Rockies: Dante Bichette hit three home runs and Larry Walker hit two more as the team connected seven times in beating Arizona 1 1-10. The power surge gave the Rockies a chance to practice their version of the Mile High Salute, popularized last season by the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. Walker gave a military salute as Bichette crossed home plate following the first of his homers. Bichette returned the favor after Walker's two homers. "It's something I've been thinking about all spring," Walker said. "Being that it's coming from Denver, it's not coming from our cockiness. It's just our salute that the Broncos did, and hopefully what worked for them will work for us." Houston Astros: Jeff Bagwell and Carl Everett hit two-run homers in the first inning as the Astros beat the Braves 6-3. Los Angeles Dodgers: Outfielder Billy Ashley cleared waivers and was sent outnght to Class AAA Albuquerque. Pittsburgh Pirates: Jon Lieber. bothered by elbow tendinitis since camp began last month, threw without pam for the second consecutive start. But he wasn't satisfied wrth the results: Five runs and 10 hrts allowed in Si innings m an 8-6 Pirates victory over Boston. Fox. SF -Benitez. M Anaheim Angels: Omar Olivares gave up five runs and five hits in one inning to finish the spring with a 10.80 ERA. Baltimore Orioles: Though manager Ray Miller isn't expected to make public his 25-man roster until after Sunday's exhibition game, infielder Ozzie Guillen has been given every indication that he has made the club. ,' "He hasn't told me anything yet, but he said he's leaning to me," said Guillen. Miller held off making his moves official because of pitcher Scott Kamieniecki's back spasms and catcher Lenny . Webster's sore right elbow. , Cleveland Indians: Dwight Gooden, who missed his previous start because of two rainouts, pitched five innings and allowed two runs and seven hits, walking two and striking out three in the 8 1 -pitch outing as the Indians lost to Philadelphia 5-4. Kansas City Royals: Hipolito Pichardo and three relief pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the Royals beat , Detroit l-O. Pichardo has pitched 14 scoreless innings in five exhibition outings , Minnesota Twins: A state lawyer in St. Paul, Minn., asked a judge to order major league baseball and the Twins to answer questions about whether they sought to force the state to build a new ballpark. Ramsey County Judge Margaret Marnnan will decide whether the state's antitrust investigation can proceed. She indicated she will not decide for at least a month. Oakland Athletics: Kevin Mitchell, the former MVP trying to make the team as a DH. went 2-for-4 with a single and a tnpie vs. San Diego , raising his average to .250 in four games for Oakland.
