(UPI) - The uickest weddings in the west or i iy where take place on demand ny time of the day or night in Las pgas wedding chapels. 'I he Vegas weddings, from $20 to ,; )0, also are the cheapest. Quickie weddings also take place f in Reno and Carson City, being part of the industry town fathers count on for income. In Nevada, a pair needs no blood test, no waiting period, no residency requirement. Just get your license and find a place. It's not hard. The wedding chapels never close. The Rev. Cecil Degarmo and his vvife, Alberta, on the wedding chapel scene for 12 years, in an interview the other night talked about the people who come to the wedding chapels and how the business works. It was nearly midnight. But the interview was interrupted twice as Degarmo, a retired Methodist minis- Yarns Galore "Florida's Largest Needlepoint and Yarn Stores" Fort Lauderdale: 2306 E. One at a chapel across the street. They took fifteen to 20 minutes, all particulars, including sales pitch for extras. The Las Vegas Court House, open 23 hours a day, sells wedding licenses for $10 during regular hours and at all other times for $20. Regular hours are 9-5, Monday to Friday. A marriage commissioner will officiate at a wedding for $25 during the same "regular hours", $30, other times. But at a wedding chapel such as the Silver Bell, for less than $25 but more than $20, a couple can have a candlelight ceremony (bulbs in electric candles; no wicks), get a free wedding license holder and a free copy of The Marriage Creed full of advice. Sample: "Caress as you would be caressed. Warm your loved one's body with your healing touch. Remember that as babies can die with lack of touching, so can marriage wither from lack cf closeness." . The -hapel wedding that undercuts the marriage commissioner's rate also includes recorded music "Wedding March", "Oh, Promise Me" and bells pealing. The Vegas yellow pages list 27 wedding chapels, lined up in orderly fashion along the strip. Two can have a civil or religious ceremony and put it on American Express, Master Charge, Bank Americard or even write an out-of-state check at some chapels. At the Lucky Wedding Chapel, the slogan is "The place where lucky hearts unite." It doesn't imply that the luck extends to the gambling casinos. "Complete immediate arrangement," reads the ad for the Circus Wedding Chapel. "Arrangements" sounds strangely funeral. At the Chapel of the Roses, there's free champagne. The Little White Chapel promises "sincere and dignified candlelight weddings with recordings." Most throw in colored pictures and recordings of the ceremony for the tiigh-priced wedding, around $50. The names of the chapels are snough to stir Cupid. To wit: Lucky Wedding Hitching Post, Precious Memory Wedding Chapel, Little Chapel of the Flowers, and of course, Cupid's Wedding Chapel. Plastic and real flowers are sold for from $7.50 to $20 at the Silver Bell Wedding Chapel. When she's not helping with a five-minute wedding, Mrs. Degarmo makes up ribbons for the bouquets. Silver Bell, as other chapels, also, has a selection of wedding rings, dresses and veils. For 25 cents, friends can buy a handful of rice in a plastic bag. So far this year, some 40,000 marriages have been performed in Las Vegas. Three ministers account for a third of the wedding chapel marriages. The Rev. Johnny B. Love, suprisingly, performed fewer than 1,000. "They won't sell you a license if you're drunk," Mrs. Degarmo said. "And I think that is true. I've never seen anyone all boozed up get married here." She has seen some other sights. "Like the time the fat bride fainted, fell on the bridegroom who was a little bit of a thing and the whole party tumbled down the aisle like a house of cards," Mrs. Degarmo recalled. "What I don't like to see is 14-year-old girls who look like they should be home playing with dolls getting married because they're going to have a baby. "Pregnant minors is one reason they'll give a court order for a license down at the courthouse. I think it's a shame." Mrs. Degarmo said the couples are all ages. The oldest bride she recalls was 92. The prettiest middle-aged one was 55 and "just glowed it was a first wedding and she had a white gown. "Some people just stop and get married in their travels, coming in in blue jeans, sweat shirts, cowboy boots," she said. "We get blacks, whites, Orientals and a lot from California. We get a good share of second marriages and a lot in the upper middle ages the divorced or widowed couple that want to have a quick wedding without getting all the kids involved. "And sometimes I see unusual things." She told of the bridegroom who. walking down the neon-lighted chapel's tiny garden path, doubled up a fist and socked his bride in the mouth, knocking her down. "Then he helped her up and they went to their car, arm-in-arm," Mrs. Degarmo said. "I wonder what kind of a marriage that will be," I asked. "Probably a very good one," Mrs. Degarmo said.
