To keep an eye on some of them, a pilot was hired to fly over the property daily looking for r :: rs, poachers and more mundane problems like broken fences. "A lot of our men are deputized, and we have a good two-way radio system," Dahl said. He added that rustling is "noticeable" and that poaching is a problem because it depletes game ahead of the hunting season. "This man in the air keeps pretty good track of all that," he says. Dahl, a Mormon, believes hard work is indispensable to success on the ranch. The word "Deseret" means honey bee, which he said connotes industriousness. The ranches' cattle brand represents the beehive. "When Moses came down off Mt. Sinai with 10 commandments, there was one that a lot of people overlook," Dahl said. "It says 'Six days shalt thou labor.' Most people read the part that says 'On the seventh day you shall rest.' They don't read the first part." Dahl is looking forward to visits by Mormons who will be traveling to , Central Florida from Utah for the EMERGENCY INTERVENTION SERVICE COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH CENTER Exciting, dynamic volunteer training program starting soon. "7ic Community retU You" Village Booterij Village Square Shopping Center - Tequesta Pork Shoes DEER PARK (UPI) - A pilot flies overhead with an eye out for rustlers and poachers while cowboys below ride an airboat to round up cattle that stray into the swamps. It takes the pilot five days of low-level flying to cover the Deseret Ranches of Florida, which sprawl over nearly 300,000 acres in east Central Florida, not far from Melbourne. The ranches, two giant spreads producing cattle, citrus and timber, are owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints the Mormons. Although they are a church operation, and about a third of the 80 men on the payroll are Mormons, the ranches are run much like any other large cattle and citrus enterprise. "It's a commercial operation," says Harvey A. Dahl, the rangy Nevada rancher brought in by the church to manage the Deseret Ranches. "The main purpose is for profit." The ranches' 3,000 miles of fences contain more than 50,000 head of beef cattle. Orange and grapefruit trees cover 2,400 acres, and timber grows on about 150,000 acres. Hunters with special leases can bag quail, deer, turkey and wild hog on the land the church bought more than 25 years ago. "When this land was cleared in 1950, we had to improve it to pay the taxes on it," says Dahl, who stands 6-foot-4 without his cowboy boots and served as a special assistant to Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson during the Eisenhower Administration. Dahl takes a fierce pride in the fact that while the church legally qualifies for exemptions, it voluntarily pays taxes on the Deseret Ranches operation. Beyond that, he says, the ranches never have accepted the subsidies or matching funds available from the government for agricultural 'We could have had millions of dollars in federal matching money for ... and other things. But we've never taken one penny from the federal government for any practice on the ranch.' - HARVEY DAHL "We could have had millions of dollars in federal matching money for land clearing, water development, drainage and other things," he said. "But we've never taken one penny from the federal government for any practice on the ranch. "I don't believe the federal government ought to do for anyone a thing they ought to do for themselves," Dahl said. The ranches' cowboys merge modern equipment with the more traditional methods of rounding up cattle. While they usually ride horses, they sometimes leave those mounts for an airboat when cattle stray into marshy areas. And, they have job-related entertainment when the work is done. "We have rodeos here on the ranch," Dahl said. "There's a lot of roping, riding, bucking bulls. We've got some very good hands who work here on the ranch." "We have a continual flow of good people coming here applying for employment. We never have trouble finding qualified employes. A lot of them have been here 20 years or more. There's a very slow turnover. A man moves on the ranch, he becomes part of the community." Sixty-three families live on the ranches, with enough children to fill two buses to neighboring schools. There's also a Mormon church with about 100 members. Because of its size, the ranch has 728 Park Ave. Lake Park FOR CHRISTMAS Circulation Service Department Hours: Monday - Friday 4: 00 AM - 7:00PM Saturday 4:00AM - 10:30AM Sunday 4:00AM 12 Noon the Palm Beach POST and TIMES v Size Up Om Diamond Solitaires TO SOMEONE SPECIAL-SOMETHING SPECIAL iO T" "1 1 When you give someone a Singer sewing machine, you're giving VZA I H something really special.
