Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, December 12, 1976 BU Benefit Planned To Eat Up Wille 5 Big Campaign Debt Bud Newman Politics ikOlOJJlBaB tlemember Richard Wille? Somehow, it seems like he was elected sheriff months ago, but it's been only five weeks since he buried Democrat Richard Lopez by a margin -of 30,000 votes to win the sheriff! office. ,Ville's been keeping a low profile sinee his Nov. 2 victory, but next SiiSday night, he will emerge long emjugh to attend a benefit dinner aimed at helping him pay off his lafge campaign debt. I put in the campaign in excess oC$9,000 of my own money which I borrowed," said the North Palm Beach police chief, adding his total campaign costs were "right close to $50,000." i was amazed," he said. "I had nOdea in the world an election would cost that amount of money." r&ille said he expects about 500 to 60?. people to attend the $10-per-per-son benefit cocktail party and dance. One of the party's organizers, a clgge friend of Wille's named Eva Wmnmer, has her sights set on 1,000 gilEsts just enough to pay off WJJle's entire campaign debt after expenses. Whatever I raise, I will use to assist me in the paying off of those noles," Wille said. "Hopefully, I can r$e maybe $3,00O-$4,0O0 after expenses." TS he doesn't raise $9,000, he said, "then I would have to refinance my house to pay off my balance of what I owe." The benefit, scheduled for 8 p.m. atthe Helen Wilkes Hotel in downtown West Palm Beach, will feature live music, hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches and a cash bar. It will alpo feature two unusual prizes money trees. 3lrs. Wummer said she plans to ptace dollar bills perhaps 30 or so on Christmas trees to be given away as prizes, just for something "different." She said she is donating the trees and the money. And, she said, she expects the cost of the benefit will be about $500. Wille said during the last five weeks he's been busy winding up his four-year tenure as police chief in North Palm Beach. His resignation takes effect Dec. 27 and he's been working on his transition. He also attended a three-day seminar in Tallahassee last week for the state's 26 new sheriffs. He said defeated Sheriff William Heidtman, who Wille beat in the Sept. 28 GOP runoff, has been very cooperative in providing information Wille needed. "Everything I've requested, he's had done immediately," Wille said. "Everything I've asked to do or look at or see, he's provided." But Wille said he did not plan to attend last night's testimonial affair for Heidtman because "that's his personal party. "He should be entitled to it without me present," Wille said. "I don't think I belong there." He said he did not know if Heidtman planned to attend his party next week. ty legislative delegation, especially the three resident senators, have a bit of a dilemma on their hands Thursday. New state Senate President Lew Brantley (D-Jacksonville) is coming to West Palm Beach for a luncheon talk at the Forum Club at the Downtown Holiday Inn. Many in the delegation are members of the club and normally would attend, particularly to hear one of their own. But the West Palm Beach chapter of the League of Women Voters also is having a luncheon for the delegation Thursday at the home of lawyer Sylvan Burdick, and it seems the legislators promised to attend that luncheon before the Forum Club event was arranged. Sen. Don Childers (D-West Palm Beach) said Friday he plans to attend the League of Women Voters luncheon, and he said fellow Sen. Harry Johnston (D-West Palm Beach) would be there, too. Delegation chairman Ed Healey (D-West Palm Beach) said he and other representatives will also opt for the League luncheon over the Brantley appearance. Unless he's advised of the conflict in advance, Brantley will certainly be curious why one of the local legislators show up Thursday to hear him speak. Bills have been killed in the Senate before for lesser reasons.
