DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS MARCH 31. ill nn -SJl WAANmwot V3fR This mechanical 'cafe organ crowned the dance floors of 1930s Belgium. It has drums, cymbals, an accordion and a saxophone. The instruments play on their own, as though by magic. Ho-ho. "I love it!" Bob says, beginning to snicker. HA! HA! HA-HA-HA! The 1930s English bobby rolls his eyes and cackles louder. "He's really getting tickled now," Paul says, tittering, too. HO-HO-HO! HA-HA-HA! "I'm not sure we should let that one go, Paul," Bob says, and the collectors crack up. But they haven't pulled it from the auction yet. Saturday's auction is open to the public. It will be at 2 p.m. at 791 Park of Commerce Drive, off Congress Avenue in Boca Raton. The auction will also include 10 pieces from Tampa collector Mark Jaffe. Prior to the auction, you can view the mechanical instruments and games today through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hobe Sound. 546-6010. (5 TV imm mm INSTRUMENTS From ID - pieces of the Milhous private col-. lection, which are worth roughly ' $3 million. - It will be the first time Soth-: eby's holds a bidding bonanza in " Boca Raton. The New York auc-: tion house couldn't display the ' instruments as well as the Milhous : brothers did inside their Congress Avenue office building, says Soth-' eby's representative Kirtley Morton. The building's interior designed for entertaining friends and for charity functions resembles a Hollywood stage set, with turn-of-the-century street scenes and a hand-made replica of a 1927 Grand Salon carousel. ' .. Don't ask how much it cost, : but rest assured, the Boca Raton : brothers can afford it. They are the - founders of Treasure Chest Ad-: vertising, the California company I (now in Baltimore), that prints : Sunday comics and circulars. " They've sold that business but still : own Perry-Judd's Inc. of Waterloo, Wis., which handles the print- '. ing of a few magazines you might . have heard of: Time, Life, People ; and Sports Illustrated. Both compa-j; nies are among the largest print- - ers in the nation. '. .No surprise, then: auction prices are not for the faint of - pocket. A "fine and rare" German - orchestrion built in 1920 is sup-: posed to sell for about $700,000. A ; century-old musical box for : $25,000. Seem steep? The box, ' ' you see, comes complete with an " automated horse-race game, so ' you can place a bet before every ; song. - The instruments inspire flights ' of fancy. It's easy to imagine the '. 1910 Dutch street organ more ornate and pastel-colored than anything in Disneyland rolling . through a festival in Amsterdam. - Look, mother! The statues are mov-'. ing! Crowds would ooh and aah as ; the hand-carved figurines rang bells in time to a circus song. : But the Milhous brothers in-'-, sist they aren't caught up in the : romance these instruments ; evoke. They are mechanically minded men. They like machines, . and they like music but only of ' the finest quality. They don't play musical instruments themselves, but they can tell you exactly how the pins and pulleys, vacuums and .valves conspire to make these self-playing wonders work. ". These automated orchestras operate like primitive computers or old-fashioned printing machines, Paul Milhous explains. When the recorded voice and changing tastes put mechanical music-makers out of business, most were sold for scrap. Others were destroyed in World War II. But the technology was put to use ALD IndlcatM lulstx) Hstanlng ilavlcM ! CAREFREE THEATRE, 2000 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach. 833-7305. . They hark back to the days when a peep show was quite racy and a mechanical fortune teller was a marvel to behold. Drop in a token. "Madame Zita," hand-made in 1895, will blow you a kiss and pass you a card that tells your fortune. Or check out a "television" machine, which beckdns: "Have your mind read by television. The green ray can read you like an open book." The machine, which looks like a darkened phone booth, flashes a bright green light to discern your darkest secrets. Apparently, when it came to understanding the new technology of television "the latest science. Perfectly harmless. No shocks." there was, in 1926, a bit of static on the screen. You can put this television machine next to the modern TV in your living room for about $7,000.
