A2 Palm Beach Post-Tlmea, Sunday, December 12, 1976 Vatican Forbids Sterilization For Prevention of Pregnancy VATICAN CITY (AP) - Sterilization to prevent pregnancy is "absolutely forbidden" for Roman Catholics, even in cases where pregnancy would result in "physical or psychic evil," the Vatican said in a statement issued yesterday. - The new condemnation came in a document issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The two-page statement was dated March 13, 1975, but was officially released for the first time yesterday. ; It came in response to questions from the Conference of North American Bishops about the permissibility of preventive therapeutic abortions. The Association for Voluntary Sterlization in the United States has estimated that 1.3 million Americans ;more than half of them women underwent sterilization last year. It is not known how many of them were Roman Catholics. - Last October, physicians at a clinical congress of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago were told that more and more women are requesting hysterectomies as a means of sterilization even though the oper ation involves greater risk than the usual method of tying the Fallopian tubes. "It remains absolutely forbidden according to the doctrine of the church, notwithstanding whatever good intentions of the person acting to provide the cure or the prevention of a physical or psychic evil which is foreseen or is feared would derive from pregnancy," said the statement, published on the front page of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. The document said sterilization is "harmful to the dignity and inviolability of the human person." The congregation statement said it "is not unaware of the dissent that exists in this matter on the part of many theologians," but warned that the faithful should not use these private opinions to depart from the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church. The condemnation was limited to direct sterilizations, or any operation aimed primarily at preventing further conceptions. x&sMm orco.v.iy . fir UPl Telephoto DEVASTATION Two Turks walk away from released by officials yesterday. (AP) - Ronald McDonald, the clown mascot of the McDonald's hamburger chain, didn't get a break yesterday in Annapolis. About 1,000 marchers, protesting McDonald's proposal to open a fast-food operation in historic downtown Annapolis, borrowed a few ideas from the Boston Tea Party and threw a compatriot, dressed up like Ronald, into the city's harbor. One demonstrator said Annapolis "is rapidly becoming a town of restaurants, bars and touristy gift shops. All we want is to keep the stores that cater to local residents and not to tourists." Among the group was Annapolis Mayor John Apostol who told the protesters he backed their march. As for Ronald, who was trundled down to the harbor in a wheelbarrow, he was picked up unharmed from the chilly waters by a boat, named for one day, "The Fallen Arches." T TUT li Vr" IxXXXl a Mi'KAsm. In Oklahoma, travel was halted on some highways by the glaze of ice. The Turner Turnpike, known to many tourists bound southwest, was impassable for a time. The premature winter-like weather gave birth to the first large formation of floating ice in the Missouri River below Gavins Point dam, the Army Corps of Engineers reported. River levels shortly will be cut back on the "Big Muddy" by reducing the input of water stored behind dams, bringing the river's navigation season to an end. By Unlltd Prett International From northern Texas into the lower Midwest, venturesome motorists skidded or moved cautiously yesterday on icy highways slicked by a broad belt of freezing rain. Seven persons, three of them children, died on an ice-coated highway near Newman in southeastern Illinois, in the collision of a truck and a passenger car. "It was just solid ice," said Douglas County Deputy Sheriff John Calhoun of the crash scene. Rain and drizzle extended from western Texas into parts of the Ohio valley and eastward into southeastern and Atlantic coast states, skipping Florida. Bridges and overpasses in much of that area were especially treacherous until temperatures rose slightly as the day wore on.
